Vincent Michael Tycholas

Vince Tycholas1

November 15, 1951 – February 3, 2023

With heavy hearts and great sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Vince Tycholas at St. Boniface Hospital, with his family by his side.

Vince is greatly missed by his devoted wife of 50 years Grace; sons Ryan (Winter) of Edmonton and Derek (Lené) of Thunder Bay; daughter Krista; only grandchild Colton of Thunder Bay; sisters Phyllis (Ted) Shwaluke and Alison Bach; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by daughter Amanda (2021) and recently, best friend Dennis Pero (2023).

Vince started working at an early age, delivering newspapers, and setting up bowling pins. As a young adult he began his employment at Carling O’Keefe. After becoming a husband and father, he decided to pursue an accounting career, proudly earning his CGA designation in 1986. He held controller positions at Ed Vickar Chevrolet, Hash Jeans International, Regal Furniture, and Quality Bed & Spring. In 1990, he began employment as GST Auditor with Revenue Canada. In 1998, he transferred to the Government of Manitoba as Computer Audit Specialist, a position he held until his retirement in 2010. He enjoyed a well-deserved and happy retirement, often heard saying “everyday is Saturday”.

Family was important to Vince. His wife, children, and grandson were first and foremost. He took great pride in every milestone, big and small. Pops was always willing to lend a hand and ear, eagerly sharing his advice and well-rounded expertise. He was more than a father, but also a true friend to his wife and family. Becoming a grandfather was a big highlight to family life. He looked forward to every visit and phone call. Colton and Gramps shared many trips to the ice cream parlour and lengthy conversations, especially over their newly shared interest in NASCAR.

Vince had an avid passion for travel, especially road trips. Once retired, on any given day he would spontaneously decide to “go for a ride”. Over the years, he spent many hours meticulously researching and organizing an itinerary to include many points of interest so that nothing was left unseen. His favourite drive was from Calgary to Banff, which he did several times with family and even on his own. His ultimate goal was to see North America. He proudly visited all 10 provinces and 37 states. He loved to elaborately recall, with picture-perfect detail, accurate accounts of each and every trip. In later years, his love of travel expanded to include all-inclusive resorts and cruises.

Vince endured many health challenges including heart disease and cancer. He fought and faced his battles with great fortitude, retaining independence and living in his own home to his final days, just as he wanted. His positivity, courage, and strength are an everlasting inspiration.

His presence, integrity, intelligence, vibrant personality, unquenchable thirst for knowledge, detailed storytelling, and everyday conversations will be greatly missed and forever cherished.

Cremation has taken place and a private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to Operation Excellence Health Sciences Centre Foundation or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

  2. Sad to see this today in the Free Press. I worked at CRA and collaborated on some audit files with Vince who was the PST guru. I enjoyed meeting and talking with him every time we met. We had a lot of interests in common to discuss that weren’t work related. He was a Great guy. My condolences to the family.

  4. Vince was a great man and I will truly miss our email exchanges and phone calls, especially during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Vince always made me laugh and he provided such thoughtful insight on an array of topics. He was a wise man who could converse with anybody. I’ll always cherish the times Vince and Grace visited New York City and the many laughs we shared. We always had fun! My deepest condolences go out to the entire family. May you be comforted by memories of the good times you shared. He will always be in your heart. Lots of love, Greg

  5. Very sad to hear about Vince’s passing. I worked with him briefly and he was always kind to me. My thoughts are with his family.

  6. Tanis Menheer (former Co Worker)

My sincerest condolences to Vince’s family. I had the opportunity to work with Vince during his time with The Province. Since learning of his passing I have been reminded of the times I traveled with him for business and smiled at some the memories. He had a gruff exterior but a kind heart. He worked hard and always shared his knowledge. A particular memory stuck out too me, I was in Calgary working with him right before his “surprise” retirement. He announced he was going home early and proceeded to start giving me things out of his meticulously organized work bag (very unusual) …. upon my return to the office on Monday, the work he completed was on my desk and we received an announcement he had retired. That was it ….. he was gone. Sending thoughts, prayers and hopes that memories will sustain you all during this difficult journey.

  7. Today, I write in tribute to my beloved Uncle Vince. He was a man of many talents and a deep love for his family, friends, and those around him. From a very young age, I always looked forward to visits from him and Auntie Grace, and their family. I considered my Uncle Vince as a favorite uncle and mentor.

He was incredibly knowledgeable on a wide variety of topics in addition to his expertise as a CPA. From world politics to baseball, chess, and NASCAR, Uncle Vince could always be counted on to provide sound advice, thought-provoking insights and opinions.

Uncle Vince was an incredible man and a great example of how to live a full, meaningful life. He will be remembered and greatly missed by me and all who had the honor of knowing him.

  8. I was very saddened to hear of Vince’s passing. We had just spoken a week earlier and it seemed that he had turned a corner with his treatment. He was very animated and happy and as always, positive. I will miss his gracious hospitality, great conversations and lots of laughter when we met. He would regale us with his anecdotes on life. I already miss his cheery voice. My condolences to Grace and the children. You were blessed with a wonderful husband and friend and a loving father. He will be missed. May his memory be a blessing.
    Love, Alex.

  9. Vince and I started at the CRA as auditors back in May of 1990. There were twelve of us that started out and we became known as “the dirty dozen”. We had a blast touring Manitoba and preaching the GST gospel. Vince and I were almost tarred and feathered at one small town. We laughed all the way home. He was a true gentleman and a pleasure to work with. I’ll miss him forever.
