Nicolas Demos

1943 – 2023

On May 30, 2023, Nicolas Demos, 79, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away peacefully at Grace Hospice.

Nick immigrated to Canada from Greece in 1967 at the age of 24 after serving in the Greek army for 2.5 years. For the first year he lived in Toronto with his cousin Alex. Together they got on a train going west with plans to reach Vancouver but stopped in Winnipeg to visit a cousin. Nick never got back on that train and Winnipeg became his home. Nick ended up spending the rest of his life there with his wife Bridget and their three sons.

Bridget and Nick married in 1970. They met in Thompson, Manitoba while Nick was working as a cook and Bridget was visiting her sister. They resided there for a year with their first-born John.

In 1971 they moved back to Winnipeg where they had two more sons, George, and Jim, and bought a house on Strathcona Street.

Nick, the second youngest of five children, was born during the second world war in 1943, to Yannis and Fotene Demos in Pikerni, Arcadia, Greece. His early jobs included sheep herding and harvesting walnuts on the family farm.

Nick was a talented cook and worked at Rae and Jerry’s steakhouse for over 40 years. He was also famous as a home cook, and some of the best dishes he made were broiled calamari in olive oil and tomato sauce, grilled octopus, fried floured fish, oven-seared pork chops, and horta, pastitsio, and dolmathes.

Nick was predeceased by his beloved wife Bridget; mother Fotene; older brother Jim; older sister Angela; and father Yannis who died at 100 years old.

Nick is survived by sons John (Anna), George, and Jim (Haley Butcher); grandchildren Ilena, Ksana, Nicos, Ella, and Miro; and his many nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and siblings in Greece and North America.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 9, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, with Rev. Fr. Nikolaos Tambakis presiding.

The Family would like to thank the staff at Grace Hospice for their support and excellent care in the last 6 months. We would also like to extend our deep gratitude to the Taylor family, Tammy, Bob, Eugene, and the late Thelma for all their help and support.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Grace Hospital Foundation.

  1. Nic always helped the staff clean the dishes after a long day. The one thing I will always remember about Nic, is that he would sneak leftovers to his beloved dogs Wilbor and Fubar. He loved his dogs.
