Mildred Wreggitt nee Bugera

Mildred Wreggitt, nee Bugera, passed away on May 16th, 2023, at the age of 89, after enjoying a very fulfilling and eventful life.

Mildred was born on a farm in the RM of Hillsburg, near the town of Shortdale, on November 11, 1933, to the parents of Fewronia (nee Storozynsky) and Harry Bugera, the youngest of 8 children.

Always seeking new adventures, Mildred traveled to Winnipeg at the age of 16 to start her working life. Mildred married Joseph Storozuk on June 10th, 1955, and gave birth to their 3 children in the following several years, Sylvia, Larry (Lawrence), and Mariann. The family moved to Hamilton where Mildred started her nursing career after graduating as an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) in 1964.

A Family split resulted in Mildred raising her children on her own. Now back in Winnipeg, Mildred juggled Nursing assignments with her dream of opening an ice cream parlour on Selkirk Ave, though it never quite materialised. She ran several rooming houses, upgrading houses and outfitting rooms, and occasionally fed some of her tenants.

Mildred remarried in 1973, to Jack Wreggitt of Winnipeg. Adventure called again, and Mildred and Jack moved to Winnipegosis where they owned and operated the Winnipegosis Hotel for several years before returning to Winnipeg, where she opted to leave Jack and set out on her own again.

Mildred was finally able to fulfil a lifelong dream of buying a riverfront home where she once again tended to tenants on Glenwood Crescent. Her mother Fern, now in her mid-90’s, prompted Mildred’s next chapter as she devoted herself to lovingly caring for her ailing mother for several years before her passing at nearly 101 years old in 1998. The care giving continued as she assisted her elder sister Marie prior to her passing.

Mildred was predeceased by her parents, sisters Oxana, Olga, Annette, and Marie, brothers Bill and Russell, and her youngest daughter Mariann. She is survived by brother Steve Bugera of Kelowna, BC., her children Sylvia and Lawrence (Larry), 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She had a close relationship with nephew Clark Marcino of Brandon Manitoba.

Mildred was well known for her determination, big ideas, anxiety, and feistiness. She will be fondly remembered by all she encountered including the nurses and staff at Jocelyn House Hospice (another riverside property!) where she was well cared for in her final months.

A celebration of life will be held at Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler Ave in Winnipeg on June 24th at 11:00 am.
