Picture of Lorne Lester

June 20, 1932 – June 9, 2020

Lorne Lester died June 9, 2020 in Selkirk, MB. He was born on June 20, 1932 in Victoria Beach, MB and grew up there. He is predeceased by his wife Anne Lester, his parents Rex and Lilly Lester, sisters and brothers Ellen Whyte (Walter), Vernon Lee, Bert Trainor, Glen Lester (Betty), Marina Chapel, parents-in-law Pearl and William Eleen, sisters-in-law Olga Wolko (Max), and Luba Eleen, brothers-in-law John Eleen and Clayton Thompson. Dad is the last of his siblings, but he is survived by sisters-in-law Helen Trainor, Polly Thomson, Anne Thomson, and brother-in-law Jim Chapel. Also surviving him are daughters, Wanda (Martin), Tanya, Louella, and grandson Luke.

Lorne married Anne in 1952 and they both worked hard while raising their children. Dad loved to figure out how things worked and he would take on any job. He worked building roads, mining, trucking up north and across Canada, and together with Mom ran a store in Traverse Bay before they retired to live near East Selkirk, in the Walkleburg district.

In retirement, Dad sat still only to watch the news, sports, or to play cards and Scrabble. Normally, he was building or fixing something in the garage or yard. He and Mom always had a big garden. He enjoyed discovering new wild flowers, plants, and wildlife in or near the yard. He loved his grandson and spent a lot of time with him, especially when Luke was a child. Dad always had an amusing story to tell about a sibling, a cousin, or a friend. Please tell someone a funny story in his memory.

Thank you to Dr Demsas, the nurses, and all the staff at Selkirk Regional Health Centre. Everyone was so kind and supportive.

At Dad’s request, there will be no formal funeral. To live in hearts you leave behind is not to die.

  1. Although I haven’t seen your Dad (Lorne) for many years I did though have the great pleasure of knowing him when we worked together at Swan River The Pas Transfer. He was a great guy and always was a great co worker. I remember when he invited us to bonspeil at Victoria Beach. It was a good time. Sorry to know of your loss and am sending sympathy and blessings. Your dear Dad was so very proud of you all and where you ended up in LIFE. My Dad worked for Lorne back in the 70’s and drove one of his FREIGHTLINERS for SRTP. I always thought he was a good businessman, with great support from your MOM. May they both now RIP together. With Sincere Sympathy, Doug HUTSEL, son of Ernie.

  3. Hello Lester Clan,

Uncle Lorne could light up a room with his Joy and Laughter! And what passion! I remember him and my mom talking politics! Oh my gosh…..the Lebanese High Volume Voices would come out and the volume of the conversation would be enough for the rest of us to scatter….Yet for them, it was that zest and passion for life that is and was The Way of The Ateah Family.

So a good hockey game or a good “discussion of the political topic of the day”….People who live in Passion, leave the World a better place…

So…..Uncle Lorne, I know you are home. You have your Anne back and I am choosing to hear you and my Mom, still living in spirit and passionately and joyously disagreeing about politics.. Is not true love, when you can have different political views and still Love Each Other so much?

Your light is still so bright Uncle Lorne, that my heart still feels it and always will. I know your family feel the same way.

    Love,love and love always….Calli Lee

  4. Wanda, Tanya, Louella and Luke,
Curtis and I spent many pleasant visits with your parents over the years. Lorne was a wonderful person. His stories always brought laughter and we certainly enjoyed his company. He (and your Mom) were always proud of you girls and kept us up to date on what was happening with the family. Luke brought something so special to them and they loved all of you so much. Curtis and your Dad shared a love of hockey and I would hear them on the phone discussing the latest game. Hopefully they are sitting together now, lamenting the loss of the hockey season! I am so sorry for your loss, but you will always have your memories.
    Sending Love,
    Sheila Whyte

What a wonderful picture! Just the way I will remember Uncle Lorne. I have fond memories of visiting the beach home and then later in the country. Lorne’s visits with Luke to deliver garden vegetables and already cleaned and frozen, were greatly appreciated. Our chats at the Jets (1.0) games were always very entertaining between periods in the concourse. Aunt Anne will be saying “What took you so long?” and Lorne will be saying “Yes Dear” A loss to our family circle with one remaining Aunt, Polly. Our deepest condolences to your family. Sincerely Cathy and Cam Smith

  6. My condolences to my cousins Wanda(Martin), Tanya, Louella, and Luke. May your memories of the time you spent with your father comfort you in the coming days.
    Sympathies,
