Doreen Edna Scott (Poynter)

November 22, 1933 – October 1, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandma, and great grandma on Sunday October 1st, 2023. Doreen was born November 22, 1933. She was predeceased by her husband Jack of 68 years in 2021. Also, her parents George & Gladys Poynter and in-laws William & Elizabeth Scott. Mom is survived by her daughters Susan (Jim) Zimmer, Joanne (Dean), and her sons John (Marlene), Gregg (Bernice). Also 12 grand children and 10 great grandchildren. She is survived by her sisters, brothers-in-law, Joan & Gord Steels and Merle & Joe Munk and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mom was born in Winnipeg where she attended Principal Sparling school. She loved doing her schoolwork almost as much as playing baseball. She then went on to Daniel McIntyre collegiate. It was around this time she met her future husband Jack and went on to start her career at the Canadian Wheat Board. On May 30th, 1953, she married her husband Jack, then left the Wheat Board, and started her family.

Mom was always there for her children, which was very important to her and at times difficult because Jack’s job required him to travel a lot. It also required our family to relocate where we lived in Brandon and Calgary. As difficult as it was to relocate a family, mom did love the idea of meeting new friends. Eventually mom and dad moved to Winnipeg Beach to care for our grandma who was very ill. During their time at Winnipeg Beach, they enjoyed many large family gatherings which mom loved to prepare the food and host the festivities. Mom loved waking up every morning to see a beautiful creek setting out her living room window. They ended up settling there for almost 30 years.

Just like her mother before her, mom loved to bake, especially scones. She loved to cook a variety of recipes, read novels particularly Danielle Steel and knit while watching her “stories”. She was a big fan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Winnipeg Jets, Toronto Blue Jays and she loved watching curling especially the Scotties and the Briar. Mom traveled to places like Niagara Falls, Hawaii, and Palm Springs.

Mom got a job at the Assiniboine Credit Union working for seven years in a variety of positions learning different aspects of the banking business before retiring. This was something she really enjoyed. For the past 14 months, after Jack’s passing, mom moved into Irene Baron Eden Center. She loved living there and making new friends.

Cremation has taken place, and a private service will be held at a later date. In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation or Alzheimer’s Association.

Doreen was my late husband’s cousin. We were close friends for over 50 years. Many good times were spent at Winnipeg Beach with the Poynter, Scott & Robertson families. My sincere condolences to Susan, John, Joanne & Gregg & their families. Gillian Robertson (cousin by marriage)

  2. Sincerest condolences to Doreen’s loving family from the Maguire family.

A kinder, warm and more beautiful person you will never meet. She opened her heart and her homes to friends and family. I am fortunate enough to have many memories of Doreen’s generosity and hospitality, especially at Winnipeg Beach.
Doreen is now with Jack, her parents, and sister in law Eleanor ,talking and laughing.
    A life well lived.

  3. Doreen was my beloved “Auntie Doreen”. Who could forget those scones, her laughter and that I could chat all things celebrity with her. It was a bit magical staying down at the beach with Auntie Do & Uncle Jack…it’s where I discovered Beep and got to eat other things I wasn’t allowed to at home. Lol… And something I will never forget was when my husband Darren & I took Ed (my biological father) to the beach to see them again. It was so special and I’ll remember my aunt’s smile & the tears in her eyes. I have to believe that all three of them are all together again.
On behalf of my parents, Merle & Joe Munk, my sister Joy and myself & husband Darren we are sending out lots of love to my cousins, John, Susan, Joanne, Gregg and all of their extended families.
