Derryl George Dowhy

Derryl George Dowhy
October 8, 1957 – May 12, 2023

On May 12, 2023, with family by his side, Derryl peacefully passed away.

His memory will live on in the hearts of his sisters, Sandra (Richard), Darlene (Mike), and Jody (Mark); and nieces and nephews Stuart, Joanna (Corey), Tayla, Jody (Mark) Breanna, and Brett (Yulia). He will also be missed by many lifelong friends, and relatives in Canada and the USA.

Derryl will be met in heaven by his parents George and Victoria Dowhy, and his beloved dog “Misty.”

Derryl grew up in Windsor Park and graduated in the class of 1976 at Windsor Park Collegiate. He spent 28 years at Boeing in Winnipeg. He always enjoyed his work trips to Seattle over the years. Derryl loved going to Lake of the Woods. He had many treasured memories of fishing, golfing, canoeing adventures, and many escapades with his buddies over the years.

As a teenager, he was a perennial presence on the St. Boniface sports scene. Derryl spent a lot of time over the years at the Winakwa Community Club’s rink playing hockey, sponge, baseball, etc. He loved playing tennis at WPC. He was an avid golfer and was a member at St. Boniface Golf Course for a few years. Football was Derryl’s passion, and he started playing at an early age, and then to play on the St. Boniface Warriors team for many years. They won the Provincial Championship in 1975. He was a season ticket holder with his beloved Winnipeg Blue Bombers for over 33 years. Derryl was the driving force behind creating the season ticket payroll program at Boeing in collaboration with the Bombers organization; it became a huge success over the years.

We cannot reiterate enough that sports really were Derryl’s passion, whether it was CFL or NFL football, hockey, curling Formula One, golf, etc. Derryl had a great admiration for horses. He loved the Green Bay Packers from an early age. A highlight for him was when dad took him to Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Derryl loved watching his niece Ms. Breezy play hockey at UND, U of T, and overseas professionally. He also loved following his nephew Brett snow board in Canada and internationally.

Derryl loved sports, it was his thing and he enjoyed communicating and discussing games with friends. Derryl loved coming to the family house in Windsor Park where lots of great memories were made swimming, listening to music, cooking, and lots of laughs were had over the years. We will treasure the memories.

When I first met Darryl couple of years ago he instantly reminded me of my oldest son. Even though my oldest son passed away recently it was actually comforting to see Darryl because he looked and even had a similar personality to him. Darryl was always so kind, polite and a very caring person. This world needs more Darryls. I am saddened by his loss and believe he is in a happy place now. My consolancrs to his loved ones.
