Darry Martinson

Darry Martinson

September 5, 1943 – October 21, 2022

With heavy hearts we share the news that Darry Martinson departed this world on October 21, 2022, ultimately from his battle with Parkinson’s.

Darry Gordon Martinson was born September 5, 1943, in Grand View, Manitoba (no hospital in Gilbert Plains). He is survived and missed by his wife Karel; daughter Sharon (Dave); son Earl; grandchildren Lily, Grace and Adam; and step grandchild Sabrina.

He is predeceased by this parents Arthur and Agnes Martinson, and younger brother Arnold.
Darry was the oldest of four children, next was his sister Barb McDonald (Dave), brother Arnold Martinson (Brenda), and youngest brother Brian (Darla). He had fond memories of several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

As an adult Darry lived in Snow Lake, The Pas, Flin Flon, Thompson, and Winnipeg. Working for Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting and Midwest Drilling for most of his career gave Darry and his family opportunities to experience and enjoy northern living. Darry and Karel made many treasured friends that brought joy and enrichment through good times together. Sadly, they have said final good-byes to a few of those friends along the way. He joined Kinsmen in Thompson where he made a number of lifelong friends and enjoyed serving the community. After returning to Winnipeg, he and Karel soaked up lake life at Morden’s Meadows near Gimli and made more great friendships and shared good times around campfires, over cards, playing bocce or making rounds in his golf cart. A number of pets were included as beloved family members, and a great companion to Darry over miles walked together.

Darry loved a good joke and was an animated storyteller. He enjoyed many activities including golf, curling, fishing, snowmobiling, bowling, and a few hunting trips. He liked to play games whether it be Crib, Yatzee, Wizzard, Backgammon, board games, cards, going to the Casino for games of chance, or just ‘pulling your leg’. For the most part, he usually ended up on the winning side.

A Celebration of Life service is planned for November 1 at 2pm in the Chapel of Voyage Funeral Home, 472 Kirkfield Street at McBey Avenue. In lieu of flowers, friends and family are invited to make a donation to Parkinson’s research or any charity of their choice.
