Carmen Stevenson Hunter

Carmen Stevenson Hunter

1939 – 2024

Carmen passed away peacefully on January 25, 2024, at age 84 at the St Boniface Hospital.

He was predeceased by his parents Jacques and Mabel, granddaughter Madelene, and brother Ronald. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Carol; son Kelly (Maggie); grandson Alex; siblings Dennis (Sharon), Ellen (Jack- predeceased), Joyce (Colin), and Carol (Clayton); sister-in-law Judy; Jackie (Ron), Jennette (Doug) and Kenny (Linda), and daughter Pam (Ken); along with many nieces, nephews and a great-niece.

Carmen was born in Carman, Manitoba in 1939. The eldest of nine children, he spent his childhood skating on and swimming in the Boyne River. He preferred sports over school and played hockey for many years. His hockey included junior in Carman and later beer league in Winnipeg. He also played football, baseball, curling, golf, and badminton.

After marrying Carol in Morden in 1964, they lived for many years on Clarence Avenue in Winnipeg where he loved to cut the grass on his riding mower. They spent 12 summers camping, and then bought a plot of land in the Interlake, built a small cabin, and enjoyed more than 30 summers there.

Carmen started his career driving truck, moved to managing grocery stores, and then to Mia Chemical where he spent 17 years selling fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Very community-minded, Carmen did volunteer work for the Westridge Community Club, and later for the Fort Garry Legion. For years he managed the Westridge Wonders adult mixed softball team. After-game gatherings in the backyard were a frequent activity. He finished his baseball career with the South Winnipeg Senior Slow Pitch.

Coming from a large family, Carmen had an outgoing personality and loved to joke, give nicknames and tell stories. He was faced with numerous health challenges including serious complications from an operation 23 years ago – which he faced with dignity and perseverance, never complaining. His memory was amazing to the end – he did crosswords daily and could cite customer lists from 50 years ago. He was a content man – saying “It has been a great ride” at the end. Carmen had a kind heart which touched many. He will be missed.

Special thanks to the many staff in the health care system and Transit Plus drivers who helped him – particularly the St Boniface Hospital Hemo-Dialysis unit and Dr. Verrelli.

Donations can be made in Carmen’s memory to the St Amant Foundation or the St Boniface Hospital Foundation – Other/Hemodialysis.

There will be a cremation and private burial. There will be a Celebration of Life at the Fort Garry Legion on May 26 beginning at 12:30.

  1. My sincere felt sympathy to wife Carol, son Kelly and his grandson Alex whom he often spoke of. In the dialysis unit of st boniface We often had a 1/2 hour to chat before we had to go into treatment. We spoke about sports, cooking, gardening, families, and scooters which we both purchased and compared and Cesar salad (our inside joke). I got to know the family even though I never met them because he spoke highly about all of you and I knew your likes in life, like gardening and sports and cooking. We are going to miss his smiling and kind face in dialysis. He was a man that never spoke unkindly about anyone and was just a nice person to be around. He never complained even though at times he had reason to.
I don’t know who I’m going to bring apples to this fall.
May he rest in peace. It HAS BEEN A GREAT RIDE, CARMAN.
    Our deepest sympathy,

  2. Dear Carol and family
I am sending my condolences to you for the loss of your beloved husband Carmen (and a long ago friend of mine and Bob’s), many years ago.
Although we lost touch over the years, I never stopped thinking about you and Carmen and how you both were doing.
I am hopeful we can meet again.
I have many fond memories of Carmen and you. We had some good times together; lots of jokes and laughter, and fun times.
May Carmen rest in peace. And God bless you and your family, Carol.
    Sincerely,
    Marlene Young
