Bruno Zimmer
April 23, 1936 – September 18, 2023

With great sadness we announce the passing of beloved Husband, Father, Stepfather, Grandfather and Great Grandfather Bruno Zimmer. Over the last two years Bruno courageously fought his cancer diagnosis.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Astrid; his children, Dianne (Gord), Rick (Dolores), Randy (Linda); grandchildren Miranda and Zach; stepchildren Nick (Kathy), Iain (Lisa), Justine (Maya), Duncan (Pam); grandchildren; Kelsey, Erinn, Alistair, Liam, Douglas, Emma, Leah, Aidan, Colin; great granddaughters Avery, Sophie, Veronica and Ivy; along with his siblings, Olaf (Louise) and Murray (Rhonda); and many special family friends.

Bruno Ludwig Andreas Zimmer was born in Hamburg, Germany to Gertrude and Bruno Zimmer on April 23, 1936. With Horst, his Mother’s husband, Bruno immigrated to Canada , in the summer of 1954. His mother and brother followed six months later, where they resided in Winnipeg.

He worked at Swift’s as a meat cutter until he got involved with the Union as a Shop Steward. From there he had the opportunity to join his union, UFCW 111, as a Business Agent. He then ran and was elected President.

In 1989, UFCW Local 111 merged with UFCW Local 832 and he assumed the position of Secretary-Treasurer which he held until he retired. Bruno cared deeply about helping people and spent his career advocating for worker’s rights and for safe and healthy workplaces as well as supporting numerous charities.

Bruno fully enjoyed his retirement by travelling with Astrid in Canada and Europe. They spent winters in Bucerios, Mexico and made many friends who they saw year after year. They both enjoyed their time as members in various wine societies and dance clubs and were involved in volunteer board work.

He will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

  4. In the mid 1950’s as young immigrants new to Canada the Zimmer’s, my parents and their extended families began a long friendship through our mothers. A friendship extending to the 3rd generation. In the 1950’s and 60’s as young parents all with bunches of children they enjoyed Manitoba’s lakes, wonderful meals and parties. Kids were always included. After our family moved to Vancouver we continued to visit Winnipeg and as a teenager I spent many fun summers at the Zimmer house. I always felt welcome and part of the family. Bruno was kind patient and fun. I have good memories of Bruno and am grateful for the lifelong friendship our families continue to share. Much love and sympathy to Bruno’s family. Through his good nature and you, your dad has left a legacy.
