It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Arthur Mitchelson at the Tuxedo Villa Personal Care Home on November 13, 2022, at the age of 85.
Born in Scotland on October 19, 1937, Arthur was predeceased by his birth father Joseph Cortez; mother Janet Mitchelson and adoptive father Harry Mitchelson. Art is survived by his sister Hazel Noble (Gordon).
Arthur’s story starts in Scotland, when in May of 1937, Arthur’s father was killed in a construction accident while working in France. Arthur was born five months after his father’s death. Arthur’s mother remarried and the Mitchelson’s immigrated to Canada in 1945 and shortly after he was legally adopted. During his teenage years, Arthur enlisted in the RCAF Cadets for several years. He worked for 35 years for the Government of Canada- Board of Grain Commission in the labs as a Malting Technologist.
After his career ended in the labs, he found a new calling as a volunteer at the Fire Fighters Historical Society. He soon became a valued member and Director of the Museum. Everything from repair, to restoration, to being a tour guide, Arthur was always there when needed. In his spare time, he was a member of many bowling leagues and had won numerous trophies.
He will be greatly missed by his extended family; Ted, Terry, Mike, Jon, Ken, Jason, and George; the volunteer staff at the Museum, and all his friends at the Portage Avenue Salisbury House, where he was able to celebrate his 85th birthday.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at the Fire Fighters Museum, 56 Maple Street, Winnipeg, on Saturday, November 26, at 11:00 AM. Private interment will be held at a later date.
