William (Billy) Steven Chambers

William Steven Chambers
July 7, 1942 – September 14, 2024

Sadly, William Chambers (Billy), passed away at the Seven Oaks Hospital on Saturday, September 14, 2024.

Left to mourn his passing are his loving and devoted wife Helen; sister Olive (Edward) Toker; in-laws, Leona (Terry) Hancox, and Delores Borsa and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Margaret Chambers, in-laws, John and Lena Nahuliak, sister Elizabeth (Alice) (Frank) Kelner, brothers, John (Eileen), Mike (Helen), Henry (Anne), and Martin (Lorraine), brothers-and sisters-in-law, Rose Kolalon, Phillip and Joyce Nahuliak and Rick Borsa.

Also, his fur babies, Sylvester (cat), Nikki (dog), Cleo (mad cat) and Spittles (cat). Billy was extremely close to Spittles and was heartbroken when he had to recently say goodbye.

Bill grew up on a farm in Ledwyn, a small town near Arborg, MB. In his early years, Billy was schooled by nuns in Arborg. Around the age of 14, he moved to Winnipeg where his family had built a house on Selkirk Ave. He went to King Edward School, Sisler High School and then Normal School where he studied to become a teacher. His first teaching job was at God’s River, his next school was Marble Ridge east of Hodgson, MB. While teaching at Marble Ridge he attended a dance at Sunny Valley Hall in Dallas, MB. It was there he met his future wife Helen Nahuliak, who he married on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1963. They just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2023.

Billy had many jobs throughout the years as a teacher, railroad worker, and roofer. Then he joined Equifax as an Investigator where he worked his way up to Manager. While he worked in the city, he still helped his family work on the farm on weekends and holidays. When the family decided to leave the farm, Billy and his brother Mike continued to operate it. Then, when he retired from Equifax, Billy began farming full-time with the help of David Shott.

Although he had his gruff moments, Billy was a kind-hearted and generous man. Some of his favourite things to do were baseball, curling, snowmobiling, hunting and fishing. He also did commercial fishing with his brother-in-law Rick. In his early days, he enjoyed camping with family and going to Las Vegas with Dick and Maureen Johnson. Many great times to remember.

I would like to thank some very special people in our lives: Ed Toker for going to see Billy every day; Delores, Maureen, Olive and Leona for calling me and checking up every evening; and all those who have done and are still doing things for me – Susan and Brian Eyolfson, Maureen and Mitch Johnson, David and Carson Shott, Eric Friederici and many others who offered to help. It means so much to me to have loving and supportive family and friends around at such a sad time.

As per Billy’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held. Anyone wishing to make a donation on his behalf, please consider any animal shelter. Billy would love that.

Billy will be forever remembered and deeply missed.

  1. I always really admired Uncle Billy and looked up to him. He lived his life on his own terms. No nonsense. Did what he wanted to do while also standing up and fulfilling any obligation. A smart, direct guy and an inspiration to me still. And by the way Nikki surely was the kindest, gentlest dog ever, no doubt a reflection of Uncle Billy and Aunt Helen.
