January 12, 1932 to January 6, 2020
With regret we announce the passing of Rome, January 6th, 5 days before his 88th birthday, at the Grace Hospital, following a hard fought battle with COPD.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janice (Stewart); daughter Jo-Anne Lutz (Harold Nyhof); son Ron Lipp; grandsons Evan and William Lutz; sisters Barbara Tario, Evelyn Kennedy (Ross), and Joan Typa (Eugene); brother-in-law Jim (Joanne) Stewart; sister-in-law Lynne (Barry) Markham; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Rome was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Albina Lipp, brother Frank, and sisters Mary Schnell, Theresa Boivin, Margaret Maursin, Verna Panchuk, Lillian Owens and Bernice Knockaert.
Rome was born in Holdfast, Saskatchewan, and lived in Regina, and Morden, Manitoba, and moved to Winnipeg. He was employed by the City of Winnipeg in Finance Accounting Department for 35 years and retired at age 53. He had a post-retirement job at the Curtis Hotel Beer Vendor. Rome was a proud blood donor having made over 90 donations. He had a love of music, singing at events as a child, and barbershop music as an adult. In retirement, Rome swam daily at the Concordia Pool for over 30 years. One of his passions was gardening and he took pride in his yard and his tomatoes. Rome enjoyed many warm weather holidays during his retirement years.
Rome was a long-time supporter of the Siloam Mission. As a child, he knew what it felt like to struggle fulfilling one’s basic needs, and therefore, felt an obligation to help others meet theirs. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Siloam Mission in Rome’s memory
Rome’s funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 14th, at 1:30 p.m. at the Voyage Funeral Home on 220 Hespeler Avenue.
