June 22nd, 1960 – November 6th, 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Susan on Monday, November 6th. She was taken from us after a brief but courageous battle with PML, a rare brain disease. The world lost a kind and caring woman. Susan was an amazing friend to many, as well as the most loving wife, mother, daughter, and sister anyone could ask for.
Susan was born in Winnipeg and spent her early years growing up on Martin Avenue in Elmwood. Summers were spent at the Bird family cottage in Matlock. During the school year she would take piano and swimming lessons. Susan was an experienced swimmer and lifeguard instructor. She attended Elmwood High school, where she was an active member in the school, band, and yearbook editor in her final year.
After graduating high school in 1978, Susan entered the Faculty of Home Economics at the University of Manitoba, where she specialized in Clothing and Textiles. She completed her bachelor’s degree in 1982 with Honours and began her career in the textile industry.
During university, Susan started dating Charlie, even though they had known each other for years. They were married on June 4th ,1983, and moved to Ottawa shortly thereafter to start their new life together. While in Ottawa she worked as a designer for a clothing store. Each winter they enjoyed skating on the Rideau Canal and stopping to have a Beavertail.
In 1986 they relocated for Charlie’s work to Belleville, Ontario. It was here where her first child Kerri was born in February 1987. The family grew again in 1990, with the birth of Tyler in November. Susan was a full-time stay at home Mom. She volunteered at the children’s schools and was very involved in their extracurricular activities. Susan cherished every day she spent raising her kids and those memories remain fondly in the hearts of her children.
The family then spent four wonderful years in North Bay, Ontario before settling in Winnipeg. They resided here for the remainder of her years. During this time, she supported her children as they grew up, graduated, and eventually started careers in science and medicine.
Susan’s days were filled with sewing, baking, gardening, and travelling with Charlie. Volunteering was also very important to her, and she was involved with Seven Oaks Hospital for 20 years. For the past 9 years she also doted daily on her ‘grand puppy’, Maxi.
She is predeceased by her father Richard. She is survived by her husband of over 40 years Charlie, her two children Kerri and Tyler (Kristina), Mother Bevis, sister Maureen, and brother Michael (Rhonda). She is also remembered by numerous (brother and sister) in-laws, (great) nephews and nieces, cousins, and friends.
There will be a Celebration of Life in honour of Susan, at 11:00am on Mon. Nov 27th, at Voyage Funeral Home (220 Hespeler Ave).
In lieu of Flowers the family has established a donation page with CancerCare Manitoba, as Susan was also a cancer survivor.

We are very sad that Susan passed away. Susan was a wonderful next door neighbour, very friendly and so good natured. We admired Susan for how much she supported her children as they grew up. We will miss her very much.
