Sonya Gascoigne

Sonya Gascoigne

November 25, 1934 – January 14, 2023

Sonya was born and raised on a farm in Kilkenny near Fisher Branch, Manitoba, one of seven children. She worked on the farm growing up with many chores and walked to a one room schoolhouse for all grades.

When the farm was sold, she moved to Winnipeg and met the love of her life, Richard. They married and moved to St. Andrews, Manitoba where they raised their three children; Bruce, Glenda and Darcy. Sonya was a homemaker and loved the outdoors, gardening and her beautiful flowers. She was actively involved in the community, volunteering her time at the school and community club. She was known as “Ma” to many of her children’s friends. Many fond memories were shared at the cabin north of Gimli, Manitoba. After raising their family, Richard and Sonya moved to a house in Winnipeg. Later years in their retirement they managed an apartment block which Sonya took great pride in. This past year they celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary.

Sonya’s love for her family was larger than life itself. No words can express how special she was, her smile, laugh, caring touch and kind heart. She was a woman of values and as strong as they come. She touched us all deeply in many ways. We will carry her love in our hearts forever.

Sonya was predeceased by her parents Henryk and Agnieszka; sisters Vicki and Mary, and her brothers Mart and Chuck. Sonya is survived by her dearly beloved husband of over 60 years Richard; her children Bruce (Helen), Glenda (Ken) and Darcy; grandchildren Wesley (Cassie), Kevin (Kayla), Tyler (Marissa), Katelyn and Brett; great-grandchildren Evan, Charlie, Jackson, Karleigh and Karter. She is also survived by her sister Stella (Maurice) of Oregon and her brother Henry of Langley, BC; along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; and numerous friends and extended family.

Rest in Peace, remembered forever, until we meet again.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no service. The family will hold a private gathering in celebration of her life.
