Raymond Donald Varis, 61, passed away suddenly on Thursday, January 30, at his home in Winnipeg, Manitoba, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Predeceased by his parents, Toivo “David” Varis and Elsie “Alice” (née Harper), Ray leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by his beloved wife, Janet (née Malcomson), and his two brothers, David Varis (Sally) of Charlottetown, PEI, and Robert Varis (Tarra) of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Holding his memory close are his nieces and nephews, Morgan (Koady), Michael, Jenelle, and Davin (Elyssa), who will deeply miss his presence in their lives.
He is also greatly mourned by his sister-in-law, Mary, and her husband, Marc Tessier, along with the extended Malcomson family, including siblings, their spouses, and beloved nieces and nephews. Ray will be fondly missed by special friends Frank and Lia LeDrew, Dennis and Esther Mark as well as Rod and Denise Kennington.
A graduate of Red River College, Ray was a gifted automotive mechanic.
Ray embraced life with enthusiasm. An avid cyclist, he found freedom on the open road. A passionate traveler, he was drawn to the warmth of sand and sea, always seeking new adventures. He was known for his legendary beer tours of Puerto Vallarta, sharing his love of great brews and good company with all who joined him. A talented nature and wildlife photographer, he had a keen eye for capturing the beauty of the world around him, from sweeping landscapes to the smallest details of the natural world. His appreciation for music, skill in model building, and sharp sense of humour brought joy and creativity to those around him. Whether exploring new places or enjoying the familiar comforts of home, Ray lived with a generous spirit, always ready with a smile, a story, or a shared laugh.
His family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. H. Zhang, Dr. C. Ogaranko, Dr. J. Gingerich, and the compassionate team at CancerCare Manitoba for their exceptional care and dedication in ensuring Ray’s journey was as comfortable as possible. A special thank you to Joseph Tawfilous of St. Mary’s Pharmacy-Gimli.
In accordance with Ray’s wishes, cremation has already taken place. His ashes will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at a later date in Selkirk, Manitoba.
