Nestor Fostey
1943 – 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Nestor, 81 years of age, at the Misericordia Health Centre.

Nestor is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Marcella (nee Zurkowski). Left to mourn are his brother Walter (Joanne) Fostey; his nephew Darren Fostey; niece Deb (Alain) Fostey-Laliberte; great nephews Brody and Brennen Fostey; niece Sharon Petrie; nephew Darryl Petrie; and the Zurkowski family. He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Maria Fostey, brother Maurice Fostey, sister Sonia Petrie, nephews Stanley and Gene Petrie.

Nestor, a proud Ukrainian was raised in Gardenton, Manitoba. He received his education at Purple Bank School. During his youth he enjoyed playing baseball. Upon completing his schooling, he gained employment at a gold mine in Red Lake, Ontario. To further his education, he returned to Manitoba to attend Red River College. In Winnipeg he met and married Marcella. They moved to The Pas, Manitoba where they both found employment at the Pulp and Paper Mill, Nestor in the Accounting Department.

Happily, for 19 years, Nestor and Marcella lived at their cottage in Clear Water Lake during the summer months and their home in The Pas during the winter. In 1989, they packed up and moved to Lockport, Manitoba. From then on, he worked as an independent Financial Advisor.

Nestor was passionate about the stock market and continued trading all his life. He excelled in Math and loved to “crunch the numbers”.

A fan of gardening, Nestor always planted a huge garden. The large water and muskmelons were his pride. Nestor loved animals, he had fond memories of his dog Donovan, and cat Kira. His favorite past times included golf, fishing, listening to country western music, and dancing. Nestor and Marcella spent many winters in Palm Springs, CA, and Yuma, AZ. Nestor was a true foodie and was rarely seen without wearing a baseball hat.

A special thank-you and appreciation to nephew Darren Fostey for his countless hours of love, care, and devotion to Nestor throughout his illness. You went above and beyond. Your kindness will always be remembered and never forgotten.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family interment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Society of Manitoba or Diabetes Canada.

You are loved.

  1. Walter, Joanne:
Angie and I were really saddened at reading the news about Nestor. Our deepest sympathies to you and the rest of the family. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to know Nestor too well but I distinctly remember sharing the dinner table with him at Deb’s wedding and the great conversation we had. He was a great guy and we feel your loss. Vichnaya Pamyat
