Michael Ryan Hingley

Feb 21, 1981 – Aug 25, 2022

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michael on the morning of August 25, 2022, with family by his side.

Beloved son of Warren and Louise Hingley, brother of Heather Sung (Alex), Allison (Jason Hurl, Ocean, and Ireland), Jennifer (Tim), Robert (Robin, Riley, Elliot, and Oliver), Reg (Sonia, Vincent and Claire), and Susanne (Mark Alford, Huxley).

Mike was born in Hodgson Manitoba and grew up in Peguis, Ste Anne, and Winnipeg, until he moved to Vancouver in 2008. He worked in the hospitality industry for 20 years and enjoyed working with the public.

Mike had many hobbies including music, photography, and art. Mike loved playing guitar and writing music. In his younger years he was part of a few bands both in Winnipeg and Vancouver. He remained active in the music scene and enjoyed listening to music at small concert venues.

Photography was another passion of Mike’s, and he gave many photos as gifts for friends and family to cherish. Mike also expressed himself artistically through repurposing furniture, lights, and antique frames as part of his décor.

We recently discovered that he liked to write, and he eloquently expressed his thoughts and feelings, most recently he wrote about his cancer journey and the pain he was experiencing.

Above all else, his favourite hobby was taking care of his cats Brody and Chemo whom he loved to spoil. A big thank you to all those involved in getting his cats home to Manitoba, Mike greatly appreciated having them by his side.

Michael, Mike, Mikey, has many friends in Manitoba and British Columbia with whom he kept in contact with through Facebook and other social media. Mike spoke highly of all his friends and considered his friends in Vancouver to be his west coast family. He lost his dear friend Neil back in May 2021 and wrote poignant memories of him.

Thank you all for your love and support of Mike over the past 3 years.

Mike was diagnosed with AML Leukemia in May 2019. He received a stem cell transplant from his sister Heather and then courageously battled leukemia and was in remission by December.

Unfortunately, Mike continued to fight several health related complications and readmitted himself to the hospital in June 2022. He was then diagnosed with several large tumours around his heart.

His brother Rob flew to Vancouver to drive Mike home to Manitoba to be with his family for his remaining days. Rob and his family graciously offered their house for Mike’s family to provide care at home for as long as possible.

Mike spent quality time with his family, sharing his music, stories, and sense of humour. His last few weeks were spent in palliative care at St. Boniface Hospital.

A sincere thank you to Dr. Volpe, Dr. St Godard and all the nurses for their gentle kindness towards Mike during his stay. He felt and appreciated all the care he was given.

Celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, September 10 at 1:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler Ave at Henderson HWY.

Donations may be made to Cancer Care or Seeing Eye dogs.

May you Rest in Peace, finally free from pain. We hope you join family and friends on the other side and enjoy the road ahead. We all love you and will miss you always.

  1. Mike was the baby of the Hingley and Wastasecoot family unit who spent many happy times together. Believe it or not Mike was the quiet one; or so it seemed. Your life was short but full. You are loved and you will be missed. Returned to the Great Creator with peace and love. Jim, Karen and family

  2. One of the most beautiful souls and authentic persons we will ever meet. We were graced by his presence and acceptance. His unparalleled authenticity was exemplary individualization was unique and extraordinary….one can only wish to be the same. His loves and passions were clearly articulated in a sense that exemplified strength. We will never forget his passion and can only hope to have half the amount of courage he did. Rest in Peace our dear FRIEND……never forgotten and forever in our hearts……Corri and Tom
