Marjorie Evelyn Hanowski nee Toews

Marjorie Evelyn Hanowski nee Toews

June 13, 1943 – September 15, 2023

On Friday, September 15, 2023, Marjorie passed away at the Riverview Health Centre at the age of 80 years.

Remaining to cherish Marjorie’s memory are her sister, Frieda (Cecil) Anderson; her son, Elliot (Melanie) Hanowski; grandson, Auden Ozubko; nieces Tanya (Tim) Wallace and Analeza Ali, her nephew Trevor (Angie) Anderson, along with her great-niece Summer (Brian) Hudson and great-nephew Spencer Wallace.

Marjorie was the first daughter of Henry Toews and Freda Martin. She was born in Winnipeg, MB, and spent her early years on a farm north of Selkirk, MB. She moved to Winnipeg in her late teens and trained as a secretary. One of Jehovah’s Witnesses, she took up full-time preaching work as a special pioneer and graduated Gilead School in New York City in 1968. She moved to Dakar, Senegal as a JW missionary in that same year.

In 1973 she returned to Winnipeg to visit and met Konrad Hanowski at a convention. They married soon after and took up residence in Winnipeg. In 1975 they moved to rural Manitoba near Rathwell to carry out pioneer work and in 1977 they welcomed their only child, Elliot Ben. From 1977 to 1989 they lived in Rathwell, MB, where with Konrad’s assistance Marjorie created crocheted and woven wall hangings that she sold at craft sales.

In 1989 they returned to Winnipeg and Marjorie began to work as an apartment manager, a job she did at various locations around the city for the following thirty years. Konrad passed away in 2001, and Marjorie remained a widow until her own passing. In her later years she refreshed her knowledge of French and participated in the local French-speaking Jehovah’s Witness congregation. She was a kind person who made many friends and enjoyed thoughtful conversations. She particularly liked getting to know immigrants to Canada and assisting them as she was able.

Marjorie loved reading, particularly mysteries, and was a curious person who paid close attention to and thought deeply about the world at large. She loved her grandson Auden and spent many hours with him.

Marjorie was devoted to God and looked forward to continuing to serve Him in a paradise earth for eternity.

Memorial Service to be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023 at 1:00pm at the Kingdom Hall Centre, 227 Lakewood Blvd. For Zoom details, please call or text Tim Wallace at 204-471-2222.

  1. Marjorie been our neighbor for the past 4 years and we have got to know her as a very kind person and always takes time to say hi or give us a wave. May her soul rest in peace and it has been great to come across her in our journey.
