It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our mother, Lucia Ciuro (Lupo), on December 23, 2023. Mother, Sister, Nonni, Host Mother, Angel, and friend to all that knew her.
Lucy leaves behind her sister, brother, her two sons and granddaughters, for whom no sacrifice was too great for her to conquer. Sister Giovanna Solatino and Brother Salvatore Lupo. Joey (Giuseppe) Ciuro, wife Sandra McKenzie and granddaughter Jillian McKenzie Ciuro, Tony (Gaetano) Ciuro and granddaughter Randi Lee-Ann Ciuro, along with many nieces and nephews, countless friends, and relatives.
Lucy was predeceased by her parents, Gaetano and Giovanina, Brothers Santino and Pietro Lupo, her closest of friends, Maria Nirta (Cunji), Theresa Santangelo and Anthony (Tony) Gardner (Pops), with whom she was more than happy to spend his last years with before his passing.
Mom was born in Calascibetta, Sicily, where she lived until her family moved to Belgium, where she married at a young age. In 1959, she was a single mother of two in Winnipeg. Without knowing the English language, but with the love and support of the Condello and Santangelo families, Mom was able to start her incredible journey.
Mom worked in the hospitality industry for more than 50 years, most of those were spent in ToJo’s Restaurant in the Cambridge Hotel, where she was known by most as Lucy, Mom, or the Pizza Lady. The whole family worked alongside her over the years, and the amount love in that kitchen was indescribable. Her laugh was so contagious, she was the light of everyone’s day.
Along with working long days, Mom had the idea she would like to try being a Host Mother to exchange students, part of the University of Manitoba program. This idea ended up lasting for years. Mom opened her heart and her doors for these students, and provided a home filled with love, and they became part of the family. She was legal guardian to a 14-year-old student until he was able to be on his own. There was no end to Mom’s love and generosity. If you’ve been to Mom’s on Christmas Eve, then you’ve tasted her generosity.
The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at HSC HG5 Ward for absolutely everything.
Mom’s journey ended with what she always called “The Long Walk”. Your sudden departure has left a “Big Empty” in our hearts. We will walk with you one day Mom. Until then……We love you more xo

She was my mother’s (Teresa Santangelo) Condello best friend, and also a second mother to her children , she will be deeply missed !!!!! Mom and Lucy take care of each other up there, Rest in peace , Love always and forever ❤️💋😘🙏

My heart is heavy and filled with grief from the loss of you Mama. Your love, kindness , patience and strength was so freely given to so many that were blessed to know you. You never judged or lay blame. Your boys and grandchildren always were your heart and your eyes sparkled and love that filled the room when you talked about them. You taught me so much about life , love and cooking and always had time to listen and a wonderful smile and gentle touch. You will be missed by countless people, friends and family. I know you are at peace and sitting beside , “ The Big Guy “ .
