Larrie Charles Pushka

Picture of Larrie Charles Pushka

June 17, 1945 – December 17, 2020

With shattered hearts, we announce the passing of Larrie Pushka, age 75, in Winnipeg.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Florence, daughter Amara (Christian), son Nolan (Denise), grandchildren Bennett, Natalie, Spencer and Felix, brother Clinton (Brenda), mother Stella and many in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father Paul in 1987.

Larrie was born in Russell and grew up on the family farm in Angusville. After finishing school, he operated Angusview Farms, alongside his father and brother. His strong work ethic ensured every job before him was done right, making him the perfect business partner.

He loved farm life and was dedicated to his family. He was a truly exceptional father and husband, always giving the best of himself and providing his children with every opportunity.

He was very active in the community, volunteering with the fire department and serving on numerous Boards. He loved the outdoors, and spent many summers camping at Rossman Lake, working on his golf game and enjoying extended family gatherings. In winter, he could often be found curling, bowling, or later in life, ice-fishing.

In 2008, Larrie and Florence made a big move and retired to Headingley to be closer to their children. Their timing was great because grandchildren started arriving shortly thereafter. The title of “grandpa” brought Larrie much joy.

While in Headingley, he and Florence quickly got to know their neighbours and made connections through their church and new community. To escape the Manitoba weather, they became snowbirds, spending winters in Texas or Arizona.

When he wasn’t on the go, Larrie took pride in maintaining his yard and garden, and worked casually at Headingley Community Centre. He also was a constant fixture at his son and daughter’s houses – providing his much-appreciated, self-taught expertise to numerous home improvement projects.

Larrie’s calm, steady manner, good humour and ability to draw anyone into conversation helped him easily make new friends wherever he went. Despite his ever-growing social circle, he also maintained numerous life-long friendships.

His cancer diagnosis in 2018 slowed him down, and his family is very grateful to be blessed with the last two years together with him. A sincere thank you to the CancerCare team for all their support. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to CancerCare Manitoba.

Larrie will be deeply missed, and we’ll always think of him when we hear a good polka.

A private service is planned on Dec. 28 at 1 p.m. in Winnipeg, officiated by Father Eric Giddins. You can view the service live or watch a recording using the YouTube link on this website’s home page.

  1. I had the pleasure of working with Larry at the Headingly Community center. He seen me one day struggling, trying to clean up the place after a big event. He asked me if I would like some help, I said that would be Great, that was the first time I met Larry. After that we became friends, and coworkers. He was always glad to help out and always had a smile on his face. He was a good soul, and was very kind to me. My only wish is that I would’ve known him longer. My condolences to his family.

  3. To Dear Florence, Amara, Nolan, Christian, Denise.
Also to your beautiful children and Grandchildren.
Larrie was a wonderful man who I knew in bits and pieces over the years. When we travelled to Russell back in the day and spent the night in your parents’ basement. So amazing and accommodating. Taking a picture on top of the giant tractor in your dad’s farmhouse. My last memory was at the garage sale 2 years ago. He was such a gentleman yet a great barginer _ he taught me how to sell a garage! What a lovely man in so many ways!
I ache for your family and feel your loss. My heart goes out to all of you.
    Much love.

  19. Father Dominic Yuen

My deepest sympathy to you Florence and family.
Several times Larrie and you invited me for a meal at your home in Angusville. Each time was memorable; the discussions and wisdom of Larrie. He always seemed solid and stoic in his convictions and his life with Christ and the Church. I was unaware that Larrie was ill these last two years. Our lives here on earth are but a preparation for the eternal life to come. Let us live each day for the Lord and bask in His wonderful love and tender mercy. I will offer Masses for the repose of Larrie’s soul and for you Florence and family during this difficult time of loss at Christmas time. May God bless you. Father Dominic Yuen, pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Parish, 250 Burrin Ave. Winnipeg.

    1. Thank you for your comforting words, mass and your sympathy at this time of sorrow in this trying world.
We certainly did have a good life together for 50 years and do consider us lucky to have you as our pastor in Russell.

He will be dearly missed and we will always treasure the memories.
