Joyce Lee Loewen rotated

February 9th, 1933 – November 9th, 2023

Waiting no longer, November 9, 2023 Joyce Lee Loewen went home to join her life long love, David Loewen.  Born February 9th, 1933, in Winnipeg, MB to Josephine (Joyce) and Trevor (Ted) Bain.  Sister Beverely (Torchia) completed the happy family two years later.

Together Mom and Dad had three children, Pat (Robert) Spence, David (Diane) Lion, and Colleen (Greg Shende).  They were especially blessed by their grandchildren, Eric and Krystal Spence, Derek (Rebekah) and Alexa Lion, Michael and Kerrie Shende, and joining our family later, Diane’s son, Daniel (Taylor) McMahon.  Delighted beyond measure by the addition of great-grandchildren Brooklyn and Austin Spence, Kai, Ali, Elias Lion, Ivanka Lion, and Bekum McMahon.

Mom attended Lord Selkirk School where she met and made lifelong friends, including her future husband.  She spent her early years at the cabin in Kenora and loved to go fishing, thrilled by every tug on her line!

Mom began working at the age of 16 at Eaton’s Department store and worked until her retirement, nearly 50 years later.  She worked in the candy department, which was a wonderful accompaniment to her sweet disposition.

Mom loved being around people.  She was quick offering to host, organize meals and gatherings. Family meant everything to her.  She loved spending time with her family – nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and special neighbours Diane, Elmer, Geri, and “third daughter” Megan. She loved unconditionally, always ready with a smile, kiss and a hug.

Mom bowled at Rossmere Lanes, was a Brown Owl for her daughters’ Brownie troops, and was a rabid fan at her son’s football games.  She enjoyed getting together evenings at Club (playing cards with girlfriends), going to The Office (Club Regent) where she would play Bingo with her sister and where we would jest she was spending our inheritance. Dad called her “Lucky Loewen” because she was always entering contests and frequently won.

Mom proudly sewed beautiful Christmas stockings for each of the grandchildren and crocheted slippers.  She enjoyed traveling by car with Dad, attending many police shoots, playing crib with the YMCA Road Runners, and casino trips with the gang.

To know Joyce Loewen was to know you were safe with her.  She kept your secrets (probably why she had high blood pressure!). She wanted everyone to get along; be nice.

In the spirit of Joyce’s kind, loving soul, please do something nice for someone to honour her memory, however that may look for you.  See a need and answer the call, she would LOVE that you did!

A tea with be held in the hall at John Black Memorial Church (where Mom and Dad were married) at 898 Henderson Highway, Winnipeg on Thursday November 16th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

  4. Dear Colleen,
Your mom and dad were so loving and accepting of all the friends that would come and go. I personally loved the sleep overs and how chill your mom always was. She was always so friendly. I remember her warm smile. I’m glad she had a lengthy fulfilled life.
Thinking of you and all your family. I know will miss her, but also cherish all the great memories.
    Loved them both
    Christine
