November 13, 1925 – October 22, 2019

Peacefully, on Tuesday October 22, 2019, Joyce Christie, of Winnipeg, passed away at 93 years of age.

Joyce will be fondly remembered by her sons, Jim (Simone) and Roy (Pat); daughter Linda (Bob); grandchildren Steven (Chelsea), Stephanie (Kyle), Laurel, Heather (Tom), and Courtney (Steffan); and great-grandchildren, Raine and Ethan.

Joyce was predeceased by daughter Grace and husband Charlie.

Born in Winnipeg November 13, 1925, Joyce was the first of three children. Joyce grew up in St. James where she met and married Charlie Christie in 1947. They resided in St. James for 15 years before building a home in Lilyfield where they lived until 1987, returning once again to live in St. James. In her younger years, Joyce was a champion speed skater, competing in several competitions in the Winnipeg area. Before marrying, Joyce worked as a cashier for Allan, Killam & McKay. While raising her first three children, Joyce was active in Guiding and taught skills to several young Winnipeg girls. After the move to the country house, Joyce and Charlie fostered Jeanie, a young girl who lived with our family for several years. After the move to Lilyfield, Joyce loved gardening, both tending flowers and harvesting fruits and vegetables from her vast garden which she then preserved for winter meals. When Joyce was not busy gardening, she was baking up a storm for family meals or sewing clothes and Halloween costumes for her children. Quilting with a group of Lilyfield ladies provided Joyce with pleasure by crafting with friends. She also exercised her creative side by creating several ceramic pieces and painting with both oil and watercolors. Despite battling health concerns for most of her adult years, this did not deter Joyce from enjoying an active life, both with family and friends, as well as in service to others. She gave of her time in many ways, including volunteering one day a week in the office at the Volunteer Bureau in Winnipeg where she made many friends. Joyce and Charlie greatly enjoyed their summers at West Hawk Lake. First in a tent, then a trailer and finally a cottage. It was there that Joyce enjoyed swimming lengths, up and down Howe Bay. Both Joyce and Charlie loved their holidays at the lake and shared many wonderful moments with their children and fellow campers. In later years, Joyce and Charlie enjoyed trips to Hawaii and Eastern Canada when Joyce’s health would allow.

The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff at Golden West Centennial Lodge where Joyce was a resident for almost 15 years. Their care and concern were a great comfort to the family.

A private family gathering has been planned to celebrate Joyce’s life.
