May 25 1945 – Aug 10 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend James William Garrity.
“Jimmy” passed peacefully with his family by his side after a long valiant fight with medical challenges.
Jim was predeceased by his parents William and Marguerite (nee Enright) Garrity. Left to cherish Jim’s memory are his loving wife of 50 years Beverlee, his son Darren (Susanne) and grandchildren Jade (Morgan) and Angelina, as well as his daughter Catharine and Pixie (the cat). Jim is also survived by brothers; Raymond, Brian, Jackie and his sister Kay. Many in-laws, nieces, nephews and lifelong friends will miss him.
Jim was born in Winnipeg. He had 7 brothers and 2 sisters. Nothing like being able to field your own family baseball team. He attended Norquay Elementary, Aberdeen School and Tec Voc High School.
Jim was employed at Kromar Printing as well as Ketchum Printing. He then gained employment with the City of Winnipeg traffic signals and sign fabrication departments.
Jim loved football and hockey and golf. The Winnipeg Hawkeyes football team and the Old Ex Old Timers hockey team benefitted from his prowess. He was an avid reader and adept at difficult crossword puzzles. He confidently completed the New York Times crossword puzzle in ink! He was always up for a challenge whether it was poker, family game nights, TV game shows like Jeopardy or his infamous ability to do the Hokey Pokey. Jim was always happy to be with family at dinners, holiday celebrations, fishing, horseshoe tournaments and celebrating Christmas at the East Kildonan Masonic Temple. He was often among the first to arrive and helped from set up to clean up. We could always count on Jim. He enjoyed long walks and you could see him rain or shine or freezing cold all over the neighborhood.
Jim and Bev were married July 7 1973 at Wesley United Church in Winnipeg. They had a wonderful 50th year celebration this summer with many family and friends in attendance.
A heartfelt thank-you is extended to the kind and considerate medical staff at the H.S.C. Their compassionate care for Jim was much appreciated and provided him and us much comfort at this difficult time.
Cremation has taken place and according to Jim’s wishes there will not be a formal public funeral service.
There will be a private (family only) celebration of his life. We would like to thank everyone for the support during this very difficult time.
Those who wish to remember Jim are asked, please, to consider making a modest contribution to the Heart and Stroke foundation or the Canadian Lung Association in his memory. (In lieu of flowers)
