Hiram Holloway

Hiram Holloway

May 11, 1943 – January 12th, 2023

It’s with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Hiram Emmanuel Holloway.  On January 12th, 2023 at age 79, Hiram passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife Ruth by his side.

Hiram is predeceased by his parents, Basil and Annie Holloway, his siblings Roland, Watson, Calvin, Morley, Iris and Geneva.  His brothers in-law, Onslow Baker, Frank Skiffington, Roger Pardy, and Harry Brady, and his Sisters-in-law, Irene Holloway and Aurine Pardy.

Survived by his loving wife Ruth, three sons Sean (Josephine), Scott, and Craig (Samantha) Holloway and three grandsons, Mitchell, Leland, and Maximus Holloway.   Hiram is also survived by his sisters-in-law Colleen Holloway, Vivian Brady, Audrey Baker, Greta Miller (Randy), Natalie Pardy, and Brother in-law Carl Pardy (Jackie), and countless nieces and nephews.

Born May 11, 1943, and raised in Bloomfield, Newfoundland where he lived his early years, Hiram lost both parents by the time he was 14, and lived with his older siblings in Bloomfield, attending school while boarding with the Greenings during his late teens in Musgravetown. Having many friends and family, Hiram found a home anywhere he hung his coat. He attended The Fisheries and Marine Institute where he studied navigation and began a career on the sea, navigating ships to the West Indies, including Jamaica, Barbados and Caribbean areas. He dropped everything after a blind date with his soon to be wife Ruth, whom he met on April Fool’s day, but it turned out to be two fools in love, as he sold his guitar in order to trade shifts to go on a date with her, and his parka on another occasion to be with her again….only to quit his adventures on the high seas to move to Toronto with his new fiancé.

In 1967 Hiram and Ruth were married in Toronto where they had first two children. While in Toronto Hiram drove bus for Grey Coach during which time he drove many bands including Lighthouse, Dr. Music, Three Dog Night and The Stampeders.  During his tours he had the pleasure of meeting great musicians such as Kris Kristofferson, Harry Chapin, Tom Petty, Tom Cochran, Stompin’ Tom Connor and others.

In 1975 their third son was born shortly before they packed up the family and moved to Winnipeg.  While in Winnipeg, Hiram drove long haul for trucking companies, followed by a career with Grey Goose and Grey Hound bus lines.  During this time, Hiram drove many charters, always making new friends.   Many a Newfie relative would move to Winnipeg and stay with Hiram and Ruth, calling it a temporary home away from home.  He loved hosting gatherings of family and friends, playing darts and table tennis.  If Hiram was home, you were always welcome to come over unannounced for a few hours and talk about his love of music, books, and history.

In 1981 Hiram was diagnosed with stomach cancer, beating it after doctors gave him less than 2 years to live, giving him an extra 42 loving years with his friends and family, enjoying every day given by God.  As a result, in 1984, Hiram was baptized into the Seventh Day Adventist Church where he became an Elder and a Deacon, preaching on the teachings in the Bible and the Word of God.

In that 42 years even though Winnipeg was his home, Hiram still longed for Newfoundland and went back often to join friends and relatives, where he fished, laughed, and helped around the harbor.  Eventually those short family trips turned into seasonal stays with Ruth after retirement.

In October of 2022, Hiram was once again diagnosed with cancer which he would not beat.  In his final days, loved ones poured in to see him daily, and even on his worst days he would put on a brave face and a smile saying “I’m good” when asked how he was doing.   His last 3 words would be “I love you” to his wife by his bedside.

Our thanks to Dr. Michael McMillan and Rhonda as well as The Palliative Care Nurses who came daily to care for Hiram.

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba in Hiram’s memory.

A memorial Service will be held at a later date which will be announced.

  1. A life well lived. My thoughts and prayers go out to Sean, his mom, Scott and Craig. I only met Mr. Holloway once at the airport when Sean and I came back from Hawaii. Sean practically bought out all the stores on Waikiki as gifts for this family. I believe Mr. Holloway got a genuine Hawaiian shirt.

I know how important Sean’s parents were to him and I can’t imagine the grief being felt by all the family.

Please know I am here for all of you if you need anything. Mr. Holloway fought the brave fight with the insidious cancer which took him from his family and this earth.

    May he rest in peace.

  2. I never meet Harim, only a wave, after reading these beautiful words I now wish I had. I’m very close friend to Sean and Joe,

  3. This is such a beautiful right up of Hiram, a true love story. We were always made to feel at home while visiting you. Hiram was a down to earth man, and yes I could tell he did enjoy his music. The world be a much better place if there where more people like Hiram. I know Ruth you are going to miss him, with God’s grace and understanding I’m sure you will do okay as Hiram would have wanted you too. Thoughts and prayers to you Ruth & your family Blanche Cramm

  4. A wonderful gentleman, husband, father, grandfather, storyteller, avid reader and a humble man of God. Sincere condolences to his beloved wife Ruth and Sons and families and all the extended family members, friends and acquaintances. I couldn’t get enough of just being in the presence of brother Hiram and sister Ruth. I know that he was a very strong and faithful Christian man and I am confident that we will meet him again never to part. Until then I say courage to the surviving family members, and I pray that God will give you special blessings and strength to negotiate these difficult moments. Psalms 116:15 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His Saints”. Brother Hiram has given us one more reason to keep our hopes alive and keep on believing in Christ and the Resurrection when He promises to come and take us to be with Him and live forever. Courage, Peace and Blessings to the Family.

When I was a kid he always answered the door with that marvelous smile. The Holloway family was such a positive influence to be around. My warmest thoughts to you all!

  6. What a wonderful write up and beautiful life/love story. Hiram was always so welcoming and kind. I remember both Ruth and Hiram welcoming me into their home and feeding us ‘Kids’ after many hours of studying for exams in our college years. I’m so happy I got to meet your wonderful Dad. My deepest condolences and prayers to all of you. Ruth, Sean, Craig and Scott.
He was a good man. 💕
God bless you all during this difficult time. 🙏

  7. I am so saddened to hear of Hiram’s passing. I have many fond memories of him. I especially remember playing cribbage, Trivial Pursuit for hours. Hiram had a vast knowledge of many things, so fared very well playing Trivial. Hiram was a great philosopher, always a complex conversation on any subject.
I always think of him walking to my apple tree, Fall leaves all over. That’s the last time I saw him.
My deepest condolences to you Ruth, and all of your family. He stayed for Christmas after all.
My love goes out to you.

  9. As his former Pastor, I’ve seen Hiram, a very humble, kind, friendly and pleasant person. He was very strong, yet gentle loving, caring, compassionate and ever steadfast and loyal to His faith in the Lord Jesus.

In November 6, 2022, my wife (Ruby) and I were so glad to have a visit with him, shared God’s words of hope and prayed with Him together with his faithful and loving wife, Ruth.

Rest in peace Brother Hiram. See you in the resurrection morning. When Jesus comes, He will soon reward you with eternal life and you will have a grand reunion together with your beloved family. [1 Thessalonians 4:13-18]. “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’[a] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” [Rev. 21:4]
