1928 – 2024
On the morning of January 7, 2024 George William Kernaghan Sr. passed away peacefully in his sleep.
George was born in Ballysax, Ireland in 1928. At age 17 George made his way to Canada with a few of friends on a ship from Liverpool to Halifax. He eventually settled in Churchill, MB, but he always kept his strong Irish roots.
In 1960 he married Shirley Ann Brydges, and together they raised two kids, George Jr. “Jordy” and Sean. George had an adventurous spirit and visited many places. His favourite pastime was to sit and have a beer and a cigarette with friends and family, chat for hours, tell stories and have a laugh.
George is survived by his wife Shirley , sons, Jordy (Linda) and Sean; grandchildren, Devin, Daniel, Michelle, Josh, and Ayla. George also leaves to mourn his brothers and sisters in-law, as well as nephews and nieces in both Canada and Ireland.
A private family service will take place, and a larger Celebration of Life event will take place this summer.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Condolences to the family from Jennifer and Joe Barron. We have lots of warm memories of Mr Kernaghan from growing up in Churchill.
I was very sorry to hear of George’s recent passing. The news came to me in a roundabout way through a cousin in Ireland.
My Dad, Jim Thompson, was one of the friends who came to Canada with George on the boat from Liverpool. By all accounts they were an adventuresome group of young men who worked hard and had lots of fun times together. The Irish always make time for some good craic! My Dad spoke highly of George and they maintained their friendship until Dad’s death in 2022. It was very kind of George to phone me soon after, even though we had never met.
My condolences to Shirley and the rest of the family.
