George Thomas Alexander Mitchell

February 24, 1936 – April 26, 2022

It is with sadness we announce George’s passing at the age of 86. George will be forever missed by his wife Judy of 55 years; his daughter Kim (Dave); son Darren (Shelly); and grandchildren Emma, Nolan, Abby, Sarah, and Sam. He is survived by his brother Lloyd (Marilynn) of Kamloops, BC; sister-in-law Sylvia Kolisnyk; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and many special friends and neighbors. George was predeceased by his sister Joan Morrison; brother Robert; and parents Mary and William P. Mitchell.

George was born in Selkirk, Manitoba but moved to Winnipeg as a child. He attended St. John’s Ravenscourt and United College. George worked for many years at various companies retiring in 2009 from the National Leasing Group where his focus had been leasing equipment to many dentists, medical professionals, and farmers around the province. George loved his work, only retiring at the age of 73. His daily routine included driving around the city and popping in regularly to visit clients, who appreciated his no-nonsense old-school approach to business. If he wasn’t working, he spent his time, and much of his retirement, at the family cottage in Kenora, Ontario, often with a black lab at his side. The cottage has been in the family since 1967 when George cleared the land and built – and then rebuilt after a fire in 1977 – his weekend getaway. He helped make many family memories for his children and grandchildren at “the lake.” In his later years, if he wasn’t fixing or building something, he was on the porch with his coffee and a novel.

The family would like to thank the staff at Vista Park Lodge for their care and kindness of George for the past two years.

A celebration of George’s life will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice in remembrance of George.

  1. George was a force in the leasing industry and will be missed by all. He was a mentor and friend when I started at National Leasing many years ago. George was always a go to for a smile and conversation if you ever caught him in the office. He truly did love to be on the road. I would like to wish Judy and all of the family my condolences.

He sure loved the job and giving his ‘advise’. LOL

I just heard the news of George’s passing. I worked with George at NL; he taught me a lot. He was proud of and talked a lot about his family during the hours spent at trade shows. He was a very kind man. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.
