October 20, 1958 – November 5, 2022
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our “little” brother, Frankie, on November 5/22 at the age of 64.
Frank was born on October 20, 1958 at the old Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg, six months after our family immigrated from Holland. He had a difficult beginning in this world but it turned out quite well for him. Our parents worked and struggled to make ends meet in a new country and with five children but we all helped take care of him.
Frank accomplished so much throughout his life; he went to school, took part in weight lifting, bowling and loved swimming at the Kimberly Y with the “EK Sharks”. One year he made the special Olympics swim team and travelled to Halifax. He loved all kinds of sports, but especially watching WWF wrestling, the Jets, and above all the Blue Bombers with Oma. Frank earned his “Red Blazer” at St Alphonsus Church, and served as an usher with great pride.
In 1982 he began his full time work career with WASO. He loved going to work and did so for 40 years until COVID started and they had to shut down. We were fortunate that Frank spent his last 7 years with his DASCH family on Menno Bay. He had good times there, travelled, enjoyed the delicious cooking, and made many close friends.
Frank will be greatly missed. Frank was often the life of the party and never missed an opportunity to make his “special toasts” to whatever was being celebrated. He loved to have fun, his dance moves were “Elvis” quality and he was not shy about asking the single girls for a dance. Frank’s love of music was always apparent; rocking to the beat as a youngster to “assisting” the music man at a social function and a family wedding later in life.
The family wishes to thank all those wonderful people who supported Frank along the way – Special Olympics Swim Team, WASO, DASCH, and staff at Concordia Hospital.
He is survived by his brothers, Jon(Adrienne), Peter(Gale) and his sisters Alida (Claude), Brigitta (Gilles), and also by his many nieces and nephews and their children. He was predeceased by his parents, Alida and John Bergen.
Bye Frankie, be happy. We will miss you, we love you and thank you for showing us a life of unconditional love.
Burial and memorial to take place at a later date.

I was very special man and love to laugh and made others laugh! I’m so glad that I’ve got to work with him ! We had special bond at work! I will miss him dearly! RIP my friend! Love you always! 👏👏👏
I first had the pleasure of meeting Frank at the Special Olympics swim team. He was very proud of his accomplishments as were we. Later on as I worked with him near his retirement years, I took Frank and his buddy on a vacation to Florida and Niagara Falls. He was a fun spirited man to be around. I have many memories. Rest easy buddy 🙏
