It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ellsworth Smith on July 22, 2022 at the age of 75. As he wished, he was able to stay at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Halifax, N.S on October 26, 1946.
He is survived by his loving wife Anita, of 51 years; their children, Jennifer (William), Dana (Tara) and Allison (Mark); and grandchildren, Colton, Danielle, Nathan, Adam, Sarah, and Alex all of Winnipeg. He also leaves behind his sister, Carolyn (Gerald) Settle of N.S.; brother-in-law, Alvah Cole (Nancy); sisters-in-law, Lois (Jim) Steele and Mary (Mike) Ferguson all of N.B; several nieces and nephews as well as his childhood friend Don Rushton of N.S.
Ellsworth was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who was happiest when spending time with his family. He was always keen to share knowledge and trivia on a wide range of subjects and was especially fond of history. He also took pleasure in words, loved to talk, and especially enjoyed making the children of the family laugh.
He enjoyed working with his hands and did so as a machinist at CNR first in Moncton, NB before transferring to the CN Shops in Transcona.
He took pleasure in car maintenance and kept the family vehicles shining on the outside and purring on the inside. He was eager to fix anything around the house that needed it and tackled home and cottage renovations with vigor.
He and Anita were fortunate to be able to travel abroad. Ellsworth enjoyed a long retirement with summers at the cottage and winters in Florida while reminding us that family were always welcome.
His strength of character made us proud, and he will be greatly missed.
The family would like to express Ellsworth’s and our appreciation to everyone at St. Boniface Hospital, HSC, in addition to the team of care providers accessed through the WRHA’s Palliative Care Program.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family gathering is planned.
If desired, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or the Winnipeg Humane Society.

We were fortunate to meet this great guy when he and Anita bought their house in The Hamptons in Florida. I will always remember him sitting in his chair out front…and usually my husband eagerly went over to chat with him. Ellsworth could keep my husband entertained endlessly with his jokes, history lessons and/or interesting stories. Ellsworth was an incredible human being and will be missed by all of us who had the good fortune to know him.

A beautiful summation of Ellsworth’s life! We so enjoyed our time together at birthday parties and ” senior dinners”. Matt and I will miss his company. Condolences to all the family. May you find comfort in wonderful memories.
Hello Anita.
Please accept my condolences.
We have not met however Ellsworth and I were good friends in high school and when he started trade school.
I remember when he bought his first car, a Chrysler Imperial-it was big! He was happy it was bigger than his father’s. His next car was new, a mustang and it was a very pretty dark green. So I understand his long love affair with cars. It was one of the things we shared.
He did like words and liked to talk about meaningful things which is not common in high school. Among my friends he was my mother’s favorite because he was “so polite”.
We spoke by phone about eighteen months ago and unfortunately did not have the opportunity to speak again. Knowing him as I did when we were young I can only imagine your loss.
Sincerely, Noel.
My feelings of sorrow go out to the friends of the late Aubrey and Margaret Rushton on the passing of C.N. Pensioners Association of Manitoba’s most recent lifetime member. Daryl Terris’ wife Kit (nee MacVicar) of Winnipeg would generously telephone my mother to remind me of an upcoming weekly event and would indeed receive a lift to a point of interest whenever she’s in need because of Doug’s kindness to her.
My feelings of sorrow go out to the extended family and close friends of Mr. Smith on his passing. I am very fondly thinking of Kit in loving memory of Daryl Terris’ late uncle (and childhood friend of the late Mr. Smith).
