Edwin Alexander Nicholls
December 24, 1947 – May 7, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Edwin Nicholls.

He is profoundly missed by his wife Pat; his daughters Kristin and Alex; his siblings Susan Glavan (Gord), Sandra Desmairais and Ron Nicholls; in-laws Shirley Lorch, Nick Parachoniak (Karen) and Marylyn Collins; as well as many friends, neighbours and former colleagues. He was predeceased by his parents, Victor and Ella (Aageson) Nicholls and his brothers Robert and Arnold Nicholls.

Edwin was born in Dunnville, Ontario. After studying and teaching in numerous communities throughout Ontario during his young years and early teaching career, he eventually settled in southern Manitoba where he taught for Seine River School Division.

Edwin taught all grades from Kindergarten to Grade 8 and Special Education over his 35-year career. After retirement in 2003 he dedicated thousands of volunteer hours at St. Amant offering his skills, gifts, and generous spirit to help both students and teachers in the St Amant school, children in River Road Childcare, with his PALS, as Santa’s helper and alongside people in Adult Health Services and in the Community Residential Program. He was also involved in starting the Pet Visitor program bringing their dogs: Tari, Thorn and Lika to visit, bringing smiles to all who met them. Edwin also volunteered with Meals on Wheels for over 16 years delivering meals every Thursday.

We will miss Edwin most for his kind and caring heart and patient and cheerful manner. Edwin’s devotion to and love of his family was a vital force in his life. He delighted in baseball, Mozart, travel adventures, a good book, a rowdy game of Euchre and family around his table. He had immense capacity for joy and a gift for sharing it. His favourite quote was, “A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.” (Roald Dahl).

Cremation has already taken place and a celebration of his life will be held when conditions allow and when his daughter Kristin can safely join us from the Netherlands.

Should you wish, in lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the St. Amant Foundation or the Winnipeg Humane Society.

  1. I had the privilege of working with Edwin for a few years before his retirement. He was an amazing mentor with a passion for teaching. He will be missed by many! My condolences to Pat, Kristen and Alex.
