Edward Joseph Gladu

Edward Joseph Gladu
November 30, 1951- June 9, 2022

Edward died suddenly on June 9, 2022, of an acute myocardial infarction. A private man, Ed rarely let on that his 17-year battle with heart disease, diabetes and the countless side effects of his many medications was getting more and more difficult to live with. He lived each day to its fullest even though his body made that very difficult, especially these past 10 months.

He will be dearly missed by his travel buddy, best friend, and love of his life for nearly 52 years, his wife Valerie. He will also be cherished, loved, and remembered forever by his son Jason (Karen), daughter Andrea, grandsons Brendon (Sabrina), Daniel (Tamara), Colin (Courtney), Robert and his great grandchildren Jayden, Violet and baby boy coming soon whom he was very excited to meet.

Edward was born and raised in Winnipeg and worked for the City of Winnipeg in various positions for 30 years. He loved sports and was a Blue Bomber season ticket holder for 38 years. In recent years, him and his son would talk every half time to discuss the game, a part of the game Ed probably loved most. Ed enjoyed meeting up with his friends for their twice monthly retiree breakfast, having coffee at the gym after a workout with his YMCA gym crew, and sitting down for a beer with his neighbours Ron and Christine Coleman.

Ed loved retirement and was able to spend many winters with Valerie in their second home, Portugal. They also escaped the Manitoba winters with time spent in Mexica, Florida, Texas, and Arizona. He loved his family dearly and was so generous with them. Spending time with them meant so much to him and he was there to support whatever they were interested in. This included going to sports games, concerts, helping his daughter with whatever shenanigans she got into, all she had to do is call and say, “Daddy can you help me with…” and he of course would.

As per Edward’s request, there will be no formal memorial reception. Please take a moment with those who spent time together with Ed, share memories and have a good laugh together. He would love that.

In lieu of flowers, if you would like to donate in Edward’s name, the family would like to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba and the Diabetes Foundation, as their research kept him living long past that very first heart attack.
