June 17, 1928 – January 28, 2020
Peacefully, on January 28, 2020 with family by her side, Doris Penny age 91, passed away after a short illness at the Health Sciences Center. Doris was predeceased by parents, Hugh and Elizabeth Blue (nee Monkman); son Ronald Penny; grandson Naron Penny; brothers Wilfred, Ernie, Clifford and Gordon Blue; and sisters-in-law Helen, Louise and Shirley Blue.
Doris is survived by her children, Jacqueline (Robert), Cameron (Phyllis), Vernon and Cindy; grandchildren Ward (Charlene), Grant, Rhonda (Rob), Crystal, Kirk (Kayla), Terry, Leifur, Rob (Tracey), Bill, Colleen (Curtis), Sean, Justin, Jack, Randy, Terry, and Penny; sister-in-law Audrey; daughters-in-law Evelyn and Nancy; and special friend Diane Pinuta as well as many great-grandchildren.
Doris was born in the Eriksdale Hospital, grew up near Deerhorn and went to Helendale School. In 1945 she married Jack (John) Penny of Scotch Bay and farmed there for 19 years. After leaving the farm she worked hard cooking in restaurants and hospitals and in remote Northern work camps across Western Canada. She retired from CNR railway in 1985 and lived in Woodridge and then Winnipeg.
Doris was well known for her cooking and baking abilities and nobody left her place hungry. She liked being involved with her grandchildren and didn’t like to miss a family gathering. She had travelled all across Canada and made her dream trip to Scotland at age 80. As well she was an active member of the Manitoba Metis Federation, the Kildonan United Church and the Scottish Society in Winnipeg. She was a long time member on Rosha Pina Housing Co-op board and an active campaigner for the NDP elections.
Doris moved to Fred Douglas Lodge in April 2019 and enjoyed the activities there. At 91 her mind was still keen and she read the Winnipeg Free Press daily.
Thanks to the dedicated staff at Deer Lodge Hospital, Fred Douglas Lodge and the Health Sciences Center for the excellent care she received. Thanks to the family members and friends who spent many hours with Doris at the hospital and all who offered prayers and condolences.
Doris’ Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, February 21, 2020 at 1:30 p.m., in Winnipeg at Kildonan United Church, 187 Kilbride Avenue. A lunch will follow. An interment will be at held at a later date.
Donations may be made in Doris’ memory to Lung Association of Manitoba, Kildonan United Church or a charity of your choice.

I have so many good memories of us all spending time together as children with our families. Those were the good times and it is so sad that our parents generation are becoming extinct. Wished I lived closer so I could attend Aunty’s celebration of life and reunite with all the cousins. I will be thinking of you. Much love Jan
