Derek R.M.A Funk

(Ishbaa Noondin – Rising Wind)

October 28, 2002 – February 12, 2022

It is with great sadness that our family announces the sudden passing of our Son, Brother, Nephew, Cousin, Grandson and Friend, Derek Robert Michael Allan Funk.

Derek was born on October 28, 2002 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to parents Kenneth Funk and Lacey Thomas.

Derek will be lovingly remembered by his parents, Kenny and Lacey, his older brother Drenal Thomas (Allisa) and his younger siblings, Dayton Funk, Dazmyn Funk, Damen Funk & Kai Funk.

Derek also leaves to mourn his grandparents Kathy (Mick), Shirley Roulette (Dan) and Allan Erstelle (Linda), his Aunt’s Christine Funk, Amy Thomas, and Penny Thomas. His Uncles, Jay Veilleux, Derek Funk (Krystle), Mikey Funk (Sam).

Derek had many very special relationships in his life, everybody was important to him, including but not limited to all his cousins who meant so much to him, his special cousins, Mitchel, Randy, Casey, Jaden, Donovon, Amber, Tally, Gage, Tristen, Kaida, Rayne, Dontay, Blaize, Mercedes. and his Aunty Courtney and Aunty Zoey. Numerous special friends Mason Jenkins, Josh Kirton, Keegan Jenkins, Tyson Amos, Cole Cardinal, Colton Letandre to name a few.

Derek was predeceased by his grandfather’s Howard McKelvey and Mick Oliver, as well his Uncle Jordan (Shrek) Paton.

Derek spent a lot of time in Traverse Bay, Manitoba with his family. Derek loved the beach and swimming, as well as spending time with the people he loves. Derek was a kind and gentle soul, who loved hard and deeply. He was very protective of those he loved all his family and friends. Derek made it known by saying “I Love you” all the time, even to random strangers in the drive thru’s. Derek was always there to lend a helping hand to the people he loves, anytime we needed him to help move, baby sit the younger kids or just be there for us, we can always count on him. Some of Derek’s favorite activities were going to the beach, playing video games with his friends online, skateboarding and just hanging out, making people laugh. Derek was always up to his shenanigans, doing silly things and ensuring everyone was smiling and laughing. When asking the family to describe how they see Derek, the words given were all similar, love, silly, protective, funny, jokester, good twerker, pretty smile, humble, fun, loyal. Derek always wanted everyone to feel happy, loved, included and safe.

The family would like to send out thanks to all those that offered condolences, donated wood, medicines, food, drinks, snacks, supplies, as well as those that stopped by and paid their respects to the sacred fire, the singers that offered their beautiful songs and Cecil Prince and Charmaine for the opening and closing of the sacred fire, pipe ceremony, as well as getting Derek his spirit name. Special thanks to the fire keepers, that stayed outside in the long cold days and nights to ensure Derek was guided in a safe way on his journey. His friends and young ones did an amazing job. We sincerely thank you. We would also like to send a special thanks for Ms. Kate, and all the teachers at Elmwood High School for their continued support in ensuring our young people were taken good care of at this time, as well as the special ceremony that took place at the school in honor of Derek Funk.

We’re always thinking of you, my boy. We love you. May your soul rest in paradise.
