January 1st, 1954 – March 21st, 2025Â
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Father, Papa, Brother, Uncle and Friend, David Vernon Calder. Peacefully on March 21st, 2025 at Selkirk General Hospital.
Left to forever cherish his memory are his children Jacqueline (Tick), Matthew, granddaughter Veronica, siblings, Darlene, Brenda (Greg), Douglas, “Bro” Ross Orvis (Mary), niece Samantha (Adam), nephews Christopher (Pam), Riley, Cole and Jeremy.
Dad was predeceased by his Parents Vernon and Mabel, grandparents Alice and Archibald, sisters Jacqueline and Barbara, brother-in-law Ross Williamson, “Bro” Kenny Gorman, numerous family members and friends.
Dad was born on January 1st, 1954 in Selkirk, MB. Dad cherished loving memories of his mom reading the Bible to him and to his siblings. Memories of his grandparent’s and of his favorite Uncle Bunty.
Dad also spent many of his teenage years at Grand Beach with friends and family. He enjoyed duck hunting and fishing at a young age, and also later in life with his son Matthew. Dad was always a huge Wrestling fanatic!! Faithfully watching wrestling at home, introducing his mom, kids and granddaughter to his favorite show. He also made countless memories with his mom, kids and granddaughter at the Winnipeg Arena watching WWF Live!
Dad loved hosting numerous family dinners at Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving. He loved preparing his famous Turkey dinners! We especially loved his delicious dressing!! Our Birthday BBQ’s included Dad’s famous potatoes and macaroni salads! We enjoyed many family gatherings in Dad’s basement over the years. Pool games, darts and singing karaoke. We also share great memories from our annual “Calder Cup” golf tournament at the farm.
Dad took pride in his 35-year career at the Manitoba Rolling Mills. He made many good friends during his career at the Mill.
Dad made sure we never went without anything throughout our lives. He showed us the unconditional love of an amazing father and of a very proud Papa each and every day. Dad’s sense of humor was quick and clever. His numerous one liners to catch you off guard, that laughter will be missed. We love you, love you, love you, forever and always.
Dad fought a very courageous 6-month battle with cancer. His last wish was to see his daughter get married at his hospital bedside. Dad was so happy and proud to have his wish come true. It was a true blessing we were able to say our goodbyes to you, so very bittersweet to share our wedding day with you and to show you how loved you are and always will be Dad. We’ll be seeing you somewhere over the rainbow every night.
Dear Dad,
Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. XOXO
Dear Papa,
When I get to Heaven, the first thing I am going to do is find you… the second thing I will do is never let you go again. XOXO
We would like to express our most sincere gratitude to Dad’s amazing HSC Palliative care team on the 5thfloor, Romelle, Katrina, Julliette, Jessa and to numerous others. Thank you for sharing in laughter and tears, the way you cared for our father as if he were yours will never be forgotten. Thank you to Dad’s Selkirk General Hospital Palliative care team on Med 2 as well.
In keeping with Dad’s wishes cremation has taken place, there will be no formal service. A private family celebration of his life will take place later. In lieu of flowers please donate in Dad’s honor to CancerCare Manitoba. We would like to thank Voyage Funeral Home for your care during this difficult time.
