It is with deep sadness that the family of David Hunt announce his passing on May 30, 2020 at Deer Lodge Centre. Dave will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Elsie; daughter Susanne (Stuart); son Jeff (Jane) and his beloved granddaughters Sarah and Jessica. He will be dearly missed by his sister Anne (Gerard) Belanger; sisters and brothers-in-law Carol (Murray) Jeffries, Barry Morris, Velma Racette and Marion Morris; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Lyall and brother-in-law Vern Morris.

David Alan Hunt was born in Winnipeg on September 5, 1938 and grew up in St. Vital. Dave attended United College and studied accounting for three years. He spent his career as an accountant and credit manager in Winnipeg at Founders Acceptance, Consolidated Turf Equipment and the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce. Actively involved in the credit industry, Dave served on the Board of Creditel of Canada and was Chairman of the Board in 1981-1982. He travelled to several northern communities sharing his time and accounting expertise as a Volunteer Advisor for the Canadian Executive Service Organization (CESO). David also volunteered for many years with the Whiteshell Cottagers Association, serving on the Board as a member representing Star Lake and as Treasurer on the WCA Executive.

Dave was an accomplished pianist and was awarded a Silver Medal by the Royal Conservatory of Music for having the highest score in the province on his Grade IV piano exam. He was a jazz aficionado and avid outdoorsman. Dave often talked fondly about his time as a fishing guide on Lake of the Woods. He enjoyed summer camping trips with his family, camping in every province from coast to coast over the years. He also enjoyed canoe trips with family and friends in Manitoba, Ontario and the Yukon. Wintertime saw Dave and his two children downhill skiing in Manitoba and the Rockies. In their retirement, Dave and Elsie enjoyed summers at the lake and winter vacations in Cuba, Mexico and the US.

Dave’s favorite place was the family cottage on Star Lake, which he and his father built in 1951. Dave and Elsie lovingly maintained and cared for the cottage over the years. More than anything, Dave loved spending weekends and summer months at the lake, surrounded by his family. Countless afternoons were enjoyed on the cottage deck looking out at the lake and listening to jazz.

Dave loved spending as much time as possible with his two granddaughters, travelling to Brandon to visit Jessica and California to spend time with Sarah. He closely followed their lives and interests, taking great pride in their achievements and successes over the years.

Our family wishes to thank the staff on 2 East at Deer Lodge Centre for the care and compassion shown to David and his family during this difficult time.

A memorial service will be planned for a later date when family and friends can gather to celebrate Dave’s life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David’s memory to the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation.

  1. I have such fond memories of spending time with ‘Mr Hunt’ at his home in Winnipeg and at their lovely cabin in Star Lake. He had such a witty sense of humour and I so enjoyed those times with him and his family.
I can not imagine what a loss this is to everyone. He was such a kind, gentle soul and will be dearly missed. I am so deeply sorry and am thinking of you all at this terribly difficult time.
