November 22, 1949 – November 1, 2021
It is with great sorrow that we announce Gerald (Gerry) Carriere “Papa” passed away on November 1, 2021 at the age of 71, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Joanne, his two children, Tara (Jason), and Timothy (Marianne), 4 grandchildren, Dominick (Hayley), Shania, Lucas, and Calix, and his great- granddaughter, Mckinsley. He is also survived by his brother, Richard (Sherill), and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Gerald was born November 22, 1949 in Neepawa,
Manitoba to Edward and Blanche Carriere. Soon
after that, he moved to Winnipeg, where he met his life-long best friend of 66 years, Jeff (Joyce) Maw. They became more like brothers than friends.
On July 1, 1972 he met the love of his life, Joanne, and began a whirlwind romance with an engagement on September 30, 1972 and a wedding on March 10, 1973. In March 1976, Tara came along 3 years too early, according to Gerry, and Timothy followed in March 1978. Then in 1995, his first grandson, Dominick, arrived followed by his first granddaughter, Shania, in 1999. He received a welcome birthday present in 2005 when his grandson, Lucas, was born. Gerry’s youngest grandson, Calix, was born in 2009. He became a very proud great- grandfather to Mckinsley in 2019. His family was his greatest accomplishment and meant everything to him.
Gerry was very involved in his kids’ lives, coaching soccer and hockey, and attending many games, concerts, and events for his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed playing cards and trivia games with his friends, and especially enjoyed being on the winning team. Gerry loved to tell stories, and often had a story ready to go in his back pocket. Many of the stories were from his own life and experiences, and a few stretched the truth, especially when told to his kids and grandkids. After the kids left the nest, Gerry and Joanne loved to travel together and enjoyed their trips to Mexico over the years.
The family would like to thank the doctors and Cancer Care team for helping to give us 12 more years with him after his initial diagnosis. As per his wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba.

We are so sorry for your loss, and know the family here will stick together and pull through. Good memories of Gerry will help you through the sad times.
Dear Joanne and family.
My wife Roseline and I are so very sorry for your loss. I first met Gerry many years ago when my sister Marlene married Larry Wellman (Joanne’s brother).
My sister Marlene who passed few years ago always spoke so highly of Joanne and Gerry. It was obvious that she loved Joanne and Gerry so much. Gerry was a rock to the family when my sister Marlene was in her final days and was comforting to all. I’m glad he was there to help everyone in the family through that very hard time.
I very much appreciate how Joanne and Gerry welcomed me and my wife Roseline into their lives.
Gerry was kind and considerate to everyone he met .
My wife and I feel truly blessed and thankful to have had a final get together with Gerry, Joanne, Larry and Ruth about three weeks before he passed. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner with lots of talking, laughing joking and memories in addition to a few tears. Despite what he was going through, Gerry was brave and courageous throughout his illness.
We are much better people for having known Gerry. Gerry was loved by everyone who knew him. Gerry and Joanne will always hold a special place in our hearts.
