September 18th, 1926 – April 8th, 2021
Shirley passed away peacefully, with her family at her side, at the Victoria General Hospital on April 8th, 2021 at the age of 94. She was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, the only child of Arthur and Edna Bryan. She spent the majority of her life in Winnipeg. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Don on March 26th, 1972. They were married on May 1st, 1948, spending 24 years together. Don was the love of Shirley’s life and she never remarried.
Shirley is lovingly remembered by her children Karen, Bruce (Cathy) and Ian; grandchildren Donnie (Stephanie), Karyn, Shawn (Katie), Jaemy, Melanie and Kristy; great grandchildren Brooklyn, Hannah, Liam, Emily, Natalie and Cameron. She also leaves extended family and friends. Shirley always looked forward to her weekly Thursday chats with her cherished confidante in Toronto “Cousin Marilyn”.
Shirley made friends easily and looked forward to her monthly breakfasts and lunches with “the girls”. She was easily spotted from afar in the winter as wore her special orange, blue, pink and white toque all the time.
The majority of Shirley’s working years were spent at GBR Associates and Office Overload. She was a phenomenal typist who could be relied upon to type papers and documents for work, family and volunteer organizations with no proof reading required.
Shirley was active in her community and supported many organizations and charities. She was a passionate, committed volunteer who willingly donated her time. Shirley and husband Don supported the Crescentwood Community Center during and long after their children were grown. They spent many happy hours serving in several executive roles and sitting on committees at the center. Shirley volunteered for over 30 years for the Kidney Foundation of Manitoba and Poseidon Personal Care Home. She was a dedicated blood donor and received her 100th donation pin. Shirley canvassed tirelessly for the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, Kidney Foundation and March of Dimes. She knitted and donated hundreds of preemie caps, hats and scarves for the underprivileged and sweaters for family and friends.
Shirley was physically active and involved in many sports and dance activities. She and Don were avid roller skaters and roller dancers, skating away the hours at the Winnipeg Roller Rink. A favourite passtime involved square and round dancing. Shirley and Don attended many dance conventions in Canada and the USA, as well as dancing weekly at various Winnipeg community centers. Her five pin bowling team won numerous trophies. Shirley was an enthusiastic golfer and curler. She often said the only prizes she won were for “best participant” but she and her curling team scored an 8-ender in 1973 with the Grain Exchange Curling Club. When golfing, Shirley had her golfing friend “Damn Sam” with her at every game.
Shirley was always quick to smile, laugh and lend a hand. She loved meeting new people and put them at ease immediately with her sense of humour, kindness and compassion. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by all.
At Shirley’s request, cremation has taken place and no service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the charity of your choice.

As one of the long time residents , Shirley will be missed in the neighourhood.
I remember your Mom , Shirley, as a very energetic, friendly lady always willing to help. She was a very good friend of my mom , Theo Law. I know you will miss her.
Our thoughts are with you. Shirley played a very important role in my life, not only as Kristy’s grandmother but as a mother when my mother passed away. I will always remember her and the special times spent with her. Judy and Glen Nichol
Shirley was a wonderful lady and amazing, dedicated volunteer at the Kidney Foundation!
We loved working with her for so many years / decades! Her tenure was unsurpassed!
She was always very positive and spoke often of her family whom she was very proud of.
I will cherish the many memories of being around the table with Shirley when we were doing a large mailing, and the coffee breaks we shared.
PS: the photo is great – just how I will always remember Shirley
