It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear brother, father, grandfather, and uncle, Pete on Sunday, September 27, 2020 at the age of 72, at Actionmarguerite (Taché Hospital).

Pete is survived by his children Denyse (Dan) and Denis; his two grandchildren Nicholas (Cassandra), and Amy (Corey); and two great grandchildren Audrey and Marceline.  Pete leaves to mourn his half-brothers and sisters Gaston (Armande), Jean (Rita), and Laurent (Joanne); brothers and sisters: Owen (Marlene), Georgette, Rose-Marie, Florence (Tony), René, Raymond (Shirley), Michelle (Gérald), Ronnie, Annette (Richard), Rita, Collette (John), and Dolorès (Chris); and also left behind are his in-laws Philippe Normandeau (Francine), Barbara Picton (Georges), Brenda Picton (Maurice); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.   Pete was predeceased by his parents, Edythe and Camille Picton, half-brothers and sisters Joseph (Henriette), Marie, Monique, Reine (Ray Durksen), baby Pierre; brothers and sisters Georges, Francine and Maurice; and his in-laws Jake Enns (Georgette), Garry Clark (Rose-Marie), Lauraine (Ronald) and Jeannot St. Vincent (Rita), and the mother of his children, Rolande.

Growing up in Haywood, Pete was always hard working and fun loving.  He worked on the family farm and helped other farmers as well, and later hired on with the Highways Department in Elm Creek.  He then moved to Winnipeg where he and Rolande raised their two children. During that time, he tried his hand at various occupations: Duckworth Sheetmetal; Ace Recycling; light carpentry and various other jobs. He was a “Jack of all Trades & Master of None”, always out and about working and helping others.  Anytime someone needed help with a house, garage or yard job, they would drive by and get Pete to help them.  Pete was a hard worker who took great pride in keeping busy and knew how to joke around, and he loved to laugh.

He loved a great game of Yahtzee and always shook the living daylights out of the dice. And while he was busy shaking, we would be ‘cheating’ with our scores.  His greatest joy was his children and grandchildren.  He enjoyed hearing all about what they were doing.  Their visits brought the biggest smile to his face which lasted for days!

During the last two decades he had developed a number of health issues that took him to Actionmarguerite (Taché Nursing Home).  Right up to the end, he continued to ‘help out’ in the dining room before and after meals. He was very organized and had his routine to setting and clearing the tables and rearranging the chairs. Anyone who knew Pete would say he was definitely easy going. The staff loved to joke with Pete as much as he loved to tease them.  When not wandering the halls, he enjoyed watching television and listening to music in his room.  Pete kept his room neat and tidy and his clothes and stuff organized.  Pete was ahead of the pandemic; he too, stockpiled items like packets of sugar, jams, syrup in his dresser drawer.  He would meticulously cut & fold paper towels to put in his shirt pocket and drinking straws and cutlery in his pant pockets.

He thought highly of the excellent care and compassion from the nurses and staff.  Special thank you to all the healthcare workers that cared for Pete.  You treated Pete with kindness, respect and love for which we will always be grateful.

Our lives will never be the same without Pete’s presence – gone, but never forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Pierre “Pete” Picton to Actionmarguerite Foundation, 185 Rue Despins Winnipeg MB R2H 2B3 or online at www.actionmarguerite.ca

  1. Pete (aka Black Pete) worked and lived with us in my teen years. Hard working, always funny, he brought lots of laughs to all of us at the farm. Our condolences to his large family.
