Sonia Hosfield

Picture of Sonia Hosfield

It is with great sadness that the family of Sonia Luba Hosfield (nee Beyak) announces her peaceful passing on August 7, 2020, after a short stay at Riverview Health Centre.

She leaves to mourn her children Pam (Peter), Kari (Harry), Tom (Marilyn), and Andrea; her grandchildren Jeremy, Bradley (Jen), Maggie (Claude), Megan (Scott), Andrew, Brendan (Brooke), Alex, and Keenan; her great-grandchildren Abagail, Leah and Henry; her sister Sylvia; and her many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Her niece Valli held a special place in her heart. She was predeceased by her husband Harvey and her beloved brothers.

Sonia was born in Vita, Manitoba, and spent her formative years in Rainy River, working at the family hotel. It was here where she met and married Harvey and had three of their children. They moved to Winnipeg and lived here for six decades.

Sonia led a very full life. She played piano, excelled at school, curled, golfed, bowled, played bridge and other card games, and loved to cook and bake. She enjoyed the ballet, symphony, theatre, opera, and was an ardent Jets fan. She and Harvey travelled the world and had great stories to share. They spent much time with many lifelong friends with whom they enjoyed endless card games, delicious dinner parties, and robust conversations.

Throughout Sonia’s life she put into action her beliefs. She was a youth volunteer at the church when the family moved to Winnipeg, and attended St. Aidan’s Anglican Church, where she volunteered for years. She was on the founding board of Osborne House, volunteered at the YWCA, and delivered Meals on Wheels with Harvey. Sonia was a lifelong proud member and supporter of the Liberal Party. She instilled this volunteerism into her children.

For those who knew our mom she was a caring, dynamic, spirited woman who will be sorely missed.

We would like to thank her doctors and the CancerCare team, the Community Palliative Care team, and her nurse Maureen and all the staff at Riverview for looking after mom.

Due to COVID-19, no formal service will be held. A private celebration of life for Sonia and interment will be planned for a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined.

  1. To Pam and Karri and Tom and Andrea,
Wayne and I and all the Fogg family (mom- Audrey, Jim, Sue, Rob and Andy) want to extend our deepest sympathies.
Sonia was enthusiastic and passionate in everything she did. I well remember all the years at 122 Borebank St. And the fun times playing cards, sleepovers and Making fudge. She was vibrant and energetic. She will be missed.

Our mom Audrey Fogg had a lifelong close friendship with Sonia – playing bridge, and Enjoying stimulating conversations. Mom will miss Sonia, greatly.

  2. Sonia was always very friendly to me and had a witty comment or political anecdote to share. I lost my parents long ago and it was comforting to know that my good friend Pam’s Mom and Dad were still going strong in Winnipeg. I loved that when they came to visit in BC, Sonia always cooked up a batch of her delicious perogies and other great dishes. She lived life to the fullest and was strong until the end. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family. Joanne Keelan

  3. I met Sonia as a teenager through Pam. Sonia was always interested in our lives and engaging to talk to. As a busy Mom, I was amazed how active she was in the community. I know I’ve benefited from many of her cooking recipes that Pam has made.

John and I offer our sincere condolences to Pam and her family. Thank you for sharing Sonia’s life through this eulogy.

  4. LONG LIVE AUNTIE SONIA ???? I cherish my memories wit her ????????! I know she was a great great aunt, sister & person. Condolences to all those blessed enough to know her.

  5. My sincere condolences on the passing of your Mother . I have many memories of her and times spent with my parents in Winnipeg , our cabin and home. One stands out for me – I solo shopped In Winnipeg at approx age 6 and bought a a pet mouse that I proudly presented to her and my mother. My Mother screamed and jumped out of her seat but Sonia didn’t bat an eye and said it was very cute but I would have to return it . She was unflappable !
