May Saint Dimitrios intercede on the behalf of Fr. Dimitrios Sarlakis.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of Fr. Dimitrios Sarlakis on May 16, 2020. Fr. Dimitrios is survived by his only son Nikolaos (Stephanie); his mother Angeliki; his sisters Efrosini and Evdokia (Angelos); and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Fr. Dimitrios was predeceased by his father Nikolaos; brother-in-law Maki; and spiritual brother Fr. John Hess.
Fr. Dimitrios was born in Salamina, Greece on April 6, 1958. He lived a fruitful life, blessed with many loving friends and family. Fr. Dimitrios was called to the Priesthood with the Greek Orthodox Church and was ordained a Deacon in 1985 followed by the Priesthood in 1986. In 1987, he was given the option of serving at a small church in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Fr. Dimitrios followed his heart and made the ultimate sacrifice and chose to move away from his home, country, community of family and friends, possessions, and immigrated to Canada with his 5-year-old son in 1989.
Life was not easy in a new country, as a single father of a young child; but Fr. Dimitrios created a new community of friends and “family”. He lived a life focused on Christ and the eternal life and not on worldly possessions. The church, his friends and family were his life. He enjoyed solitude, and had a passion for gardening, fishing and being in nature.
Fr. Dimitrios’ wisdom, tender heart, and sense of humour will be profoundly missed. His family and friends are comforted knowing that he was a selfless servant of God for nearly 40 years and that he is celebrating with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary and all the Saints.
Due to current Public Health restrictions, a private funeral and interment will take place, with a memorial service at a later date. Fr. Dimitrios committed his life to his church community. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holy Ascension Greek Orthodox Church, 197 Euclid Ave, Winnipeg, MB R2W 2X3.
