Mary Veronica Porritt (Howe) passed away peacefully and gracefully at her home on January 23, 2020.

She was predeceased by her husband Peter of sixty years; her infant son Ashley and her beloved sister Elisabeth.

She is survived by her sons Howard (Helen), Julian (Stephanie), and Trevor (Arlene); grandchildren and their families, Andrew (Danielle), Alexandra, Danielle, MacKenzie and Grayson; her first infant great grandchild Laurel and her nieces and nephew in England, Lynn and Trudi and Gavin.

Mary was born in Basra, Iraq. She was educated in Baghdad, Iraq and Kuwait and moved to England at the beginning of World War II. Throughout her life she was the consummate care giver. She became a nurse at the tender age of sixteen. Mary was very proud to serve and gain the highest level of training from St. Thomas’ Hospital and The London Hospital in London, England where she met her future husband Peter while both doing work in orthopedics. In 1958, the young Porritt family moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where they settled in Charleswood, which at the time was a small suburb of Winnipeg. While busy raising her young family she was very active in many fine charitable organizations. She also was a very significant contributor to both the local cricket, field hockey and skiing organizations. Through her involvement in many activities over the years, she gathered a wide and fun loving circle of friends which we know were near and dear to her heart. Our ski cabin at Lariviere, Manitoba was a place of so much fun and so many memories. Our Mum loved everything about the family experiences we had there.

In the early 90’s Mum and Dad moved out to North Saanich and Sidney, B.C. They enjoyed their retirement years there and easily made many new friends.

In 2015 they made the decision to return to Winnipeg where they chose to settle at The Wellington home for senior living. Mum was very social, which was important to her. She made many more friends and met some friends from many years previous.

The loss of both of our parents in a five-month time period has been very difficult to bear. Mum and Dad you are so very loved by us all and you will always be kept living in our hearts.

We wish to thank the staff at The Wellington for their care and support while our Mum and Dad were with you. May Mum have made it to Heaven to reunite with her loved ones. Amen.
