Maria-Giovanna Tummillo—a remarkable woman whose love, strength, and grace left an indelible mark on her family, friends, and community.
Maria was born on August 21, 1954, in the picturesque village of Spezzano Della Sila, Italy. In 1966, as a teenager, Maria immigrated to Canada with her parents and brothers, settling first in Toronto. Those early years in a new country were filled with hard work and the close-knit love of family. In 1973, the Principe family moved to Winnipeg, where Maria’s life would change forever. In 1972, at a family wedding, she met the love of her life, Joe. Their connection was instant, and five years later, in 1977, they were married, beginning a journey filled with love, partnership, and a shared commitment to family.
Maria’s greatest pride and joy were her three sons—Tony, Adam, and Marco. With peace, love, and grace, she devoted her life to raising them. She instilled in her boys the values of respect, compassion, and resilience, shaping them into the remarkable men they are today. Maria always supported them unconditionally, guiding them through life’s challenges and celebrating their every success.
Her love extended beyond her sons to her cherished grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Maria was always present at their school events, family milestones, and special moments. She was their biggest cheerleader and a constant source of love and support. Whether babysitting, attending events, or simply spending time with them, Maria found immense joy in nurturing their growth. Her home was a haven for her grandchildren—a place where they always felt safe, loved, and valued.
Maria was also dedicated to her career, working in Human Resources for Zellers for many years. Her professionalism, compassion, and dedication to her work earned her the respect of colleagues and employees alike. During her time at Zellers, Maria built many long-lasting friendships that enriched her life. She valued the connections she made through her work and took pride in the positive impact she had on others.
Maria’s impact reached far beyond her immediate family. She was an active and devoted member of the Italian community in Winnipeg. For many years, Maria volunteered her time and energy at the Italian Folklorama Pavilion and numerous other Italian community events. She delighted in sharing her culture and traditions, bringing people together with her warm spirit and tireless dedication. Even as her health began to decline, Maria remained deeply connected to the community she loved so much.
Maria faced her battle with liver disease with immense courage and resilience, never letting her struggles define her. She lived her life with dignity and grace, finding strength in her faith and in the love of her family.
Maria is survived by her devoted husband, Joe; her sons and their families, Tony (Maddy), Adam (Karina), and Marco (Angie); her beloved grandchildren, Matias, Milano, and Giuliana who will carry forward her legacy of love and kindness; her brothers, Eugenio (Elena) and Renato; and her nieces Adelina (Kyle) and Michelle. Maria also leaves behind extended family in Italy and Toronto, who always remained close to her heart, along with a wide circle of friends who were touched by her warmth, generosity, and kindness.
Though we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the extraordinary life she lived—a life defined by love, service, and unwavering devotion to those she cared about most. Maria taught us to cherish family, embrace community, and live with purpose.
Mom, your love will forever guide us. Thank you for the memories, the lessons, and the example of a life well-lived. Rest peacefully, surrounded by the love you so generously shared with the world.
