1939 – 2024
Glynis Margaret McEvoy spent her last day with us on September 10, 2024. She left this world without sorrow or regret.
In her words, ‘I have had a good, long life. When it’s my time to go, it’s my time.’ Her humility, wisdom and strength has been an inspiration to many, especially her family.
Glynis was born in 1939, to Olwen and William Bennett, being the eldest of three children. Despite growing up during the difficult years of post-World War II, she recalled happy memories with her parents, her sister Olwen, brother Malcolm, and extended family.
In 1961, Glynis married Joe, and after having their first child, Gareth, they moved to Africa, where they had their second child, Fleur.
They had many adventures before moving to Canada in 1975. Glynis worked in accounting most of her career, and then at AFM, until retiring at the age of seventy. She adored her children and was an incredibly caring mother.
Halloween and Christmas were wonderful holidays growing up. Sadly, Gareth passed away at the early age of 48.
Glynis mourned deeply and said it was the hardest thing in life she had experienced. She found acceptance in time, through her faith and with support from family and friends, but she never stopped missing him.
Later in life, Glynis and Joe decided they would make better friends than spouses, and divorced, and what a fantastic friendship they shared. Their connection spanned 62 years. She was at Joe’s side, along with Fleur and Gale, when he passed away in 2023. Although Glynis had strong spiritual beliefs, she also knew how to have fun.
She had a dry wit that was hilarious and loved to go shopping. Despite significant visual impairment, she was often seen zooming around Polo Park mall with her walker, in search of the next new jacket or shoulder bag.
Glynis’s favourite place was not in front of a large crowd, she preferred small groups or one-on-one chats with friends, it was in these times her light shone brightest.
She was a great friend and had all the time in the world for you, if you needed her.
Glynis’s greatest joy was her granddaughter, Kate. The two were close and shared many laughs, hugs and love. Kate dedicated her recent 5km Terry Fox Run to her nana.
She loved her daughter-in-law Gale, aka Little G, and was keenly interested in the latest house project Gale was working on.
Glynis cared deeply for family in England and Wales and stayed connected, despite the distance across the pond.
For her family and friends in Winnipeg, her passing leaves an emptiness and loss that has been stunning. But we know what she would say. ‘Take it one day at a time, one breath at a time, and pray for guidance.’ So that is what we will do.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the caring and skilled RTs, nurses and medical staff at the ACCU unit, St. Boniface Hospital.
A Remembrance Gathering will be held on Sunday, September 29, at 1 pm, at Temple Shalom, 1077 Grant Avenue.
