November 22, 1949 – December 28, 2023
It is with great sadness we announce John’s passing at the age of 74 on the evening of December 28, 2023.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Wendy Popkes; sisters-in-law, Linda Murkin, Kim Popkes, and Debra Melosky (Walter); mother-ln-law, Joan Popkes; nephews Kole Murkin (Brittnay) and Keith Murkin; great-niece Malia Murkin, and his much-loved dog Lady.
John was an only child, and his life was filled with hardship, health issues, and struggles. He fought hard for everything he had and overcame a troubled childhood.
John joined the Navy at 17 and that service was a source of great pride for him. He moved into Sales after leaving the Navy and had endless stories of his adventures in selling just about anything you can imagine from farm insurance to Playtex products, to roofing.
John and Wendy met in 2010, and married on July 23, 2015. These last 13 years together were the happiest of his life. He had a home, a family and of course his rescue dogs.
John retired in 2016, and his favorite times were reading and sunning in the back yard, or driving around town shopping, always with his dog in attendance.
Special thanks to the staff of B5 at St. Boniface Hospital for their care and compassion during John’s last days.
Cremation has taken place, as per John’s wishes there will be no service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Winnipeg Humane Society, or a charity of your choice.

It was a pleasure to have known you John. I enjoyed your company at the many fund raisers for Wendy’s shuffle boarding. I loved it when you would bring the dogs in for a visit at the office. You will truly be missed. Pepper was probably at the gates greeting you to the next part of your journey. Peace be with you my friend.
