Muriel Moreau

June 15, 1934 – February 10, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Muriel Moreau, who died peacefully in her sleep on February 10, 2022 at the age of eighty-seven.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on June 15, 1934. Muriel was the only child of John “Jack” and Laura Fisher. She lived in Stonewall, Manitoba until the age of four when she moved to Winnipeg. As an only child, she adored her father who lost his leg as a soldier in the Great War and sadly passed away when she was only sixteen.

Nicknamed “punk” by her uncles, Muriel was quick-witted and full of joy and tenacity. She had a lifetime love of dogs, particularly poodles, who were always her loyal companions. An avid reader, she could be found with a book in-hand from the time she had learned to read. Gifted with a sharp and inquiring mind, she was naturally curious about all things.

Muriel was the mother of five children; her first child Heather who only lived for one day, John, Joyce, Kent and Lorraine. As a young mother, she was the first woman to join the board of the Winakwa Community Club and was twice elected as President of the Woman’s auxiliary. An avid supporter of the arts she held season tickets to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Manitoba Opera, and the Manitoba Theatre Centre, where she was once a board member.

Returning to school in her early forties to study Business Administration at Red River College, Muriel made friends easily with other students despite their differences in age. She was the oldest graduate of the Business Administration program at the time. After graduating, she became a manager at Sears in Polo Park and was soon promoted to senior management at Garden City.

Also in her forties, Muriel met her second husband Frank Moreau, who spotted her at a party held by mutual friends. They were happily married for over twenty years. They both loved summers at the Lake of the Woods, which were spent swimming, playing board games and cards with family and friends. She was a skilled bridge player and also enjoyed golfing and cross-country skiing.

Muriel and Frank belonged to Friendship Force for many years where they hosted international guests and Muriel gave tours of the Manitoba Legislature. They loved travelling and visited many countries including Europe, the United States, Russia, Greece, Turkey and England. They also enjoyed winters in Florida.

Muriel was predeceased by her husband Frank and her two children Kent Oades and Joyce Brownscombe. She is survived by her children John (Darcie) Oades and Lorraine Oades; her four grandchildren Angela Rodenburgh, Rick (Jeanine) Adam, Shannon Adam, and Sasha Brownscombe; her great-grandchildren Sydney Adam, Renee Adam, and Danielle Rodenburgh; her great-great-grandchildren Jude and Mila Joyce Adam; and Frank’s son Frank (Pam) Moreau.

Muriel was a good friend to all who knew her. Despite numerous setbacks in health during her later years, she lived a full and happy life. She never lost her sense of humour or indomitable spirit. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered.

A heartfelt thanks to Michael Hart and the community at Sturgeon Creek II Seniors’ Residence, the pharmacists and staff at Leila Pharmacy on Pembina Hwy and her dear friends Marg and Bill Mitchell, Val and Joe Keenan, Gladys Spracklin, Heather Menzies, Bette Brown, and Annette and Kevin Trimbee.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Manitoba Humane Society or the Deer Lodge Centre.
