Virginia Krahn

Virginia Krahn

With broken hearts, Virginia Elaine Perry Krahn’s (née Hardy) family announce her passing on October 20, 2024 at the age of 61.

Gin is survived by her daughter, Jessie; her son, Nolan; her father, Clifford; her two beloved sisters, Peggy (brother-in-law Darryl) and Ruth (Don); her nieces, Marissa (Jake) and Ashley (Zack); and her nephew, Brendan (Britney).

Throughout her life, Ginny was an adventurer with an enduring love of sports. She travelled around the world, played volleyball, basketball, handball, racquetball, golf, and others, all while diligently attending to her work at the Winnipeg Police Service for thirty years. Virg surrounded herself with the most charitable, loving friends, and spoke passionately about how they brightened her days. She often recounted her adventures in Barbados, Fiji, Florida, Australia, and many other places in the world she had travelled to with her dear friends and family. Well past her youth, mom was unstoppable and a well of energy.

Ginny loved the holidays, because they brought two of her favourite parts of life together—good food and her family. She loved eating with her dad, Cliff, during their weekly retiree lunches. Gathering together brought her nieces and nephew close to her. Those who had been to Ginny’s home had sampled her cooking. Deeply mischievous, she had a knack for creating knock-offs of expensive pasta dishes from chain restaurants. Gin had an appetite for delicious food that was unrivalled.

Long after her time playing trumpet in high school band, music followed Ginny throughout her life. Inspired by The Lawrence Welk Show, Ginny developed a singular style of irreverent tap dancing that she broke out to celebrate small wins. She channeled music into her ardent, devoted upbringing of Jessie and Nolan. She called her daughter often to play her bright songs about sunny weather, and she was a proud fan of her son’s burgeoning musicianship. Ginny loved Abba, and (paradoxically), she adored two-stepping to “I Don’t Feel Like Dancing,” by the Scissor Sisters. Jessie and Nolan will remember her nightly rendition of “Adios, Au Revoir, Auf Wiedersen,” at bedtime in their childhood: “Goodnight, sleep tight, and pleasant dreams to you.”

She was a crack-up, and she would laugh indulgently at her own jokes most of all. If there is one thing the people who knew her ought to remember, it’s the sound of Mom’s laugh. There was no sweeter music.

Pleasant dreams to you, mama.

  1. I knew Virginia since I think 1984, while working at WPS. I can still hear her laugh in my mind. After retirement, she was supposed to come visit me but it didn’t happen & I’m sad about that. We only talked on the phone. She was a kind & soft spoken woman except of course for her laugh. My condolences to the family. No more pain Virginia. Sad I won’t hear your voice again. Till the next dance my friend.

  2. So sorry to hear about Virg. We worked together for many years. She was always kind to me and spoke lovingly of her children often. I will remember her laugh and kind spirit. My condolences to her family.

  3. I see so much of Virginia’s open, kind, and funny spirit in Jessie and Nolan. I send my love and my deepest condolences to all her loved ones. Virginia, I miss your warm presence and humour. Rest in peace.

  4. Virg and I worked together back in the early 80’s. We had so much fun…laughing and being silly. Virg and our other buddy Sherri ended up showing me the ropes when I first started working in their unit at the WPD. I couldn’t have asked for a better welcome from these wonderful gals. Virg had a great sense of humour and her laugh was infectious. I am so sad to hear of her passing, but I’m glad that our lives overlapped. I’m glad to remember her smile and her joy and her kindness. The world was a better place with Virginia in it. Rest well my friend.

  5. I only met Virginia through the amazing and resilient children she brought into this world—two of the most brilliant and deeply caring people I’ve ever known. Her love of dance and song and deep friendship live on in them. I wish I could have heard her laugh in person. Rest in peace, Virginia.

To Jessie and family: I never met your Mom, but after reading your tribute, I wish I had. One can never have enough “crack-ups” in one’s life. I am sorry for your family’s great loss and pain. Rest In peace Virginia, Virg, Gin, Ginny.

  7. I meant Virg in 1996, while working for WPS. We became instant friends and remained close till the end. I was blessed to get to know her two children as well. Virg was a loyal and supportive friend and we had many great chats carpooling to work all the time. I will miss her forever and my heart goes out to Jesse and Nolin, her children. Rest in peace Virg, Glenda and I will check in on Jesse and Nolin for you❤️

  8. I had the pleasure of working with Virginia at the WPS. She was a great co-worker and more importantly a friend.
I lost touch with her after her retirement but will never forget her kindness, fairness and friendship. My condolences to Virginia’s family. Rest in peace Virg.
