John David Shields

July 6, 1951 – October 20, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of John David Shields at the age of 72.

David leaves behind his wife, Vivian, children Caroline (Jonathan) and Michael (Maria), grandchildren Rory and Mya, grandpup Cleo, his sister Susan (Prokop) and their children, Michelle, Stephen, and Mark . He was pre-deceased by his parents, Lee and Marty Shields of Edmonton. He will be dearly missed by family and friends. David was born on July 6, 1951 in Edmonton, Alberta, where he joined his older sister, Susan. He had a happy childhood helping his mother, Lee, in the yard and his father, Marty, on the golf course. David excelled in both school and sports – particularly in math and hockey. Through his hard work, he succeeded in becoming a Chartered Accountant. He was an avid skier and hockey player. Although David’s golf clubs would always have an important place in his heart, they were replaced when he met Vivian. Vivian and David were soon married and adopted terripoo sisters, Rhapsody and Melody. Rhap and Mel were then joined by Caroline and Michael. The family of six moved to Winnipeg, where David continued his Accounting career and his love of sports, playing golf, hockey and racquetball and enjoying coaching soccer and hockey.

He took great pride in watching his children grow and thrive. The Shields family increased to include bichon, Sparky, whose sweetness and naughtiness brought David great joy. David was then blessed with grandchildren, Rory and Mya, and grandpuppy, Cleo.

Dad, we know you are now at peace with your parents and dogs. May your nerf arm never tire and your heart remain full. “Krampa”, you will be forever in our hearts.

At the request of David, cremation has occurred and a private memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers and if so desired, a donation may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.

To Dance with Death

When I arrive at my last breath

‘Twill be my turn to dance with Death.

I shall not greet her with dismay

But as a friend to guide my way.

I will not know the tune of course,

But she will lead toward the Source,

The Shining Light – the melody

Will lend our dance such ecstasy

There’ll be no need for an encore.

I’ll have no fears – just joy galore

To have arrived at Journey’s end,

The House of God, to meet my friends.

And my friend Death – I shall thank you

For our shared Dance – and say Adieu.
– Marty Shields

  1. Dearest Vivian, Caroline, Michael and family……with our heartfelt sympathy as you grieve the loss of your beloved David. Our thoughts and prayers are with you always. May David rest in peace….his memory remain eternal.
Stephen, Larisa on behalf of our Burgess and Balas family.

  2. We were moved at Caroline’s wedding by David’s humorous recollections of Caroline’s early scientific talents.. His recognition of and support for what would become her future path in life spoke to his love and deep understanding of each of his family. He has left them with some wonderful memories.
