May 30, 1934 – December 26, 2020

Our mother, Joan Alice McGregor, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2020.

She was born in Winnipeg on May 30, 1934 and was the first child of Irene and Percival Crealock. She graduated from the University of Winnipeg and pursued a teaching career; on weekends she attended the Home Street United Young People’s Group where she met her future husband Kenneth McGregor. They were married (in 1959) for 56 years until his passing in 2015. After having two children she decided to follow her love of books and became a librarian with the City of Winnipeg, which she continued until her retirement. Her time as a teacher and librarian instilled the love of reading in both her children and grandchildren.

Joan very much enjoyed travelling, and her dream to visit the home of her ancestors came true when she got the chance to visit Ireland and Scotland several times. She was an avid lover of gardens and felt happiest when she could be close to nature. She also enjoyed the many camping trips with her husband and children and the many summers spent at the cabin with family and friends on Rainy Lake.

Joan was a warm, loving, caring and compassionate wife, mother and friend; she was always looking out for others. She was very optimistic and people loved her sense of humour and her “glass is half-full” attitude.

She will be dearly missed by her two children, Janet and Kevin and two grandchildren, Jason and Rebecca and the many family friends who came to know and love her. It is with the deepest gratitude that we honour our mom’s dedication to caring for her family and friends above herself.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful, caring and dedicated staff, nurses and doctors at Golden Links Lodge during our mother’s years there with dementia. We know she was loved and well cared for during her time there and for that we are eternally grateful.

There will be no formal service at this time due to the pandemic; a service/celebration of life will be arranged when COVID restrictions have been lifted.

Condolences and reminiscences may be shared in the comments below.

  1. Deepest condolences to Janet and Kevin. Our Mum, Beth, was one of Joan’s dearest and lifelong friends. Joan was Mum’s maid of honour many, many years ago. They travelled to Scotland, Ireland and the East Coast together. Joan was the sister Mum never had. We are so sorry to hear of her passing. You are in our thoughts at this difficult time.

Our thoughts are with you at this time. Your Mom was a valued member and friend at Immanuel. We missed when she left our community but she remained in our thoughts. Our sympathy is with you. In friendship, Bob and Muriel Kenyon.
