April 20, 1937 – February 19, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hannah Thompson on February 19, 2023 at the age of 85.

Hannah was predeceased by her parents Joe and Marie and her brothers Joe, George, and Jerry.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband Wayne of 66 years of marriage; daughter Valerie; son-in-law Garth and her beloved grandchildren Tom, Tanya, and Todd. Hannah is also survived by her brothers Paul and John along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Hannah was born in Carrick, MB on the family homestead on April 20, 1937. During her childhood, her family moved around to various communities in Manitoba and British Columbia, eventually returning to the community of Piney, MB around 1952. There she met her future husband and the love of her life Wayne, and their 66-year adventure began. Hannah and Wayne lived in B.C for a couple of years where their daughter was born before moving back to Manitoba. Hannah worked for around 20 years at the Bank of Montreal starting at Main Branch at the corner of Portage and Main. After many years of living in Winnipeg, Hannah and Wayne retired to Aspen Park in Gimli where they played golf and enjoyed time with family and friends. They eventually moved back to Winnipeg.

Hannah loved to travel and especially loved a driving holiday with Wayne to many of the southern states. They would pack up the car with lunch and suitcases and take off to wherever the roads took them. Over the years she enjoyed many holidays with family members including trips to Disney as well as cruises. She was always happiest when she was on her trips.

The family would like to thank the amazing and caring team from the Grace Hospital Emergency Department for their compassionate care of Hannah.

As per Hannah’s wishes, no service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

  1. Auntie Hannah taught me that me early on that girls don’t need to be seen, but not heard:. Some of my fondest memories are up in Spences Bridge with Auntie Hannah and Valerie. She took us hiking in the bugaboos, fishing for trout in the creek, and taught us how to pee in the bush.

My heart is filled with sorrow to hear of Hanna’s passing. She was so an amazing beautiful soul with a heart the size of the universe. She illuminated every gathering she was at with her beautiful smile and heartwarming laugh that enveloped us all. A true angel has been taken from us and embraced Gods hands for her next journey. You will forever be remembered with deep love Hanna such a light of happiness within.
Wayne Toodie and all the family and friends who were blessed to know her our deepest sympathies to each and every one of you. Earth has lost a true angel💞🙏🙏

Wayne, Valerie and family. I am so sorry for your loss. My heartfelt condolences and prayers to you all. Hannah was always so full of life and love for her family, and friends. Always smiling and laughing. She will be sadly missed. Big Hugs to you all. ❤️

  4. Auntie Hannah was a beautiful female force who made an enormous difference in my life. I smell dill and I think of her making pickles with Uncle Wayne. I eat borscht and think, “pretty good, but not Auntie Hannah’s.” She gave me a gift once that included a coaster that says: “Know just when to jump off the swing.” It’s still a reminder for me to read the room, listen to my own rhythms, and time accordingly. Long before I knew what I was learning from her, I was feeling it. She was delighted by things. She wasn’t scared of the tough stuff of life. She operated from the heart with truly helpful practicality mixed in. And she called bullshit when necessary. She was the kind of person you wish there were more of in the world. And I suspect she would recommend that I operate assuming that there are. Be one of those people yourself and more show up. I felt very loved by Auntie Hannah — a testament to how good she was at loving. Uncle Wayne, Toodie, Tom, Todd, Garth, and others I haven’t yet met: sending much love to you.

  5. Echoing what Tracy said. Auntie Hannah was an absolute gem. Living 3 provinces away, we didn’t see her/Wayne/Valerie often enough, but every time we did it was a cherished memory. She was the glue amongst the Pichas. She kept the crew together by offering a supportive comment or calling them out as necessary (and when called out, the boys likely knew she was right). We will miss her. Wayne/Valerie our thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

  6. I am sorry I found out about her passing so late. I grew up next door to Hannah and Wayne. I will always remember her as a big hearted person who was always (even though not blood related) my Auntie Hannah. Xmas eves were my favourite memories along with summer bar-b-qs. My condolences to Wayne, Toodie and family. She was a great lady and have nothing but the best memories of her
