On November 27, 2018, Donald Harry Atkinson passed away peacefully surrounded by family.

Born July 22, 1940, in Winnipeg, MB, he is predeceased by his wife of almost 50 years Barbara Atkinson (Doepker); and parents Harry and Daisy Atkinson.

Don is survived by his two daughters Jennifer (Darrin) Halabuza and Shannon Atkinson (John Parsons); brother Ken Atkinson; grandchildren Rhea, Darian Halabuza, Laney, Logan, Rickay Harman; and great-grandchild Hunter Halabuza.

Don grew up in Fort Garry, Winnipeg, and as a teen, his love and skill for the game of golf led to two wins in the Manitoba Men’s Junior in 1956 and 1958.  As a young adult, he spent several years in Nitchequon, QC where he worked as a meteorologist.  He then married Barb in 1968.  His career as a pilot and hers as a flight attendant for Air Canada led them to move and build a home in British Columbia.  After the birth of their two daughters, they moved back to Manitoba.

Don, in partnership with his father-in-law Maxwell (Ethel) Doepker, established Grand Beach Lumber where they worked alongside each other for many years.  His skills in the field of “handyman” then led him to McDiarmid Lumber (McMunn & Yates), whereas a sales associate he continued to take pride and care in helping people with do-it-yourself projects.  Don enjoyed golfing, reading and taking his “girls”, Barb, Jenn and Shannon, on fishing trips to Eagle Nest Landing, Pointe du Bois.

Along with his wife, they spent many years with family and friends at Sherwood Park Church of God.  He found joy in tending his garden and had a passion for supplying his family with fresh vegetables and his homemade soup.  During the summer months, Don could often be found in Birds Hill Park picnicking with family and looking for deer at dusk.  More than watching the Blue Bombers play, after each game he enjoyed sharing a discussion with his brother (affectionately known as “Nate”) over their mutual love for the team.

His dedication, loyalty and hard work defined Don’s nature in both his career and family life.  His love and friendship will remain in our hearts.

A celebration of Don’s life will be held at a private gathering.

In lieu of flowers please donate to Operation Smile Canada.
