Betty Kahler (Brown)

Betty Kahler Brown
July 31, 1935 to January 14, 2022

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our precious Mom and Nana on January 14th at Oakview Extendicare at the age of 86.

Mom was predeceased by dad Charlie Kahler, granddaughter Leanne Haras, her mother Martha Tonn, sister Irene Fonso, grandcats Sammie, Bobbie and Ginger and other extended family members.
She is survived by daughter Janice Kahler, granddaughter Amanda Haras, great grandsons Seth and Jaxon Haras; daughter Lori Kahler; son Greg Kahler, granddaughter Octavia Kahler; and sister Linda Lake along with nieces and nephews.

Mom was born in Fort Frances, ON and moved to Morris, MB and then Winnipeg as a young girl. She met a handsome young motorcycle driving man and they married in March of 1955. They were married for 49 years when dad passed in 2004.

We lived most of our lives in Winnipeg with a short time in Toronto where we moved for dad’s work. While raising her family mom also worked at various jobs over the years. She did commercial cleaning, home care, administration for the Anxiety Disorder Association of Manitoba and bookkeeping for dad’s gas station.

Mom had many health challenges over the years and the last five months even more so. In September she was sent to Grace Hospital Emergency after a fall, on to St. Boniface for a pacemaker, back to Grace for general medical care, then to Deer Lodge Geriatric Rehab and lastly Oakview Extendicare Care Home. Unfortunately with COVID restrictions there were times we could not visit her but she had her phone so we could talk every day. Fortunately we were able to spend her last two days taking turns sitting with her.

We have spent many hours sitting in hospitals anxiously waiting to hear if mom was going to pull through. This strong warrior woman surprised us multiple times.

As her health and mobility declined over the past few years mom repeatedly said how thankful she was for her girls because she didn’t know what she would do without us. We are the ones who are thankful for the time we had and were honoured to be there for her. You can rest now Mom. You have earned it.

We would like to thank all the staff, medical personnel, aides, therapists, etc. who have taken such good care of mom over the last few months in such challenging times.

In lieu of flowers if you like please make a donation to any charity that is close to your heart.

A celebration of life will be held in the spring and her ashes will be interred with dad at Brookside Cemetery.

Lori, so sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. Your mom was always such a friendly person who enjoyed visiting with people. Your memories of her will help you through the sad times. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

  2. I knew Betty for only nine years, but her sense of humor and quite wit will be sadly missed . She lived and worked along side of her neighbors for many years. She enjoyed us and we enjoyed her. From all her friends at McClure Place. We will miss you.
